Comments: This was from a low generation, mono source. I used Wavelab
to give the recording some depth, increase the bass, and dehiss it a
bit. JB found the source for this, and patched a couple
spots that were missing due to tape flips with the alternate
recording. There were some small pops throughout which were
a "feature" of the original recording. I repaired the really
noticeable ones, including one spot in "The Remembering" where I was
able to patch from another section in the song. I can't for the life
of me even remember where I did that now.
This is believed to be from a different recording than the Toads tree
that Shaun ran last year.
JB adds:
This is indeed a different tape, and the credit for unearthing it
actually goes to Dirk Uther, the fabulous ELP collector.
Seems the 2nd Boston taper was in a great spot for the show and the
crowd was about as mellow as you can find. The tape flips really
hurt, though. 1 in RSOG & the other in Ritual. But this tape
provides interesting peices missing from the other tape. Mainly,
there was no intermission! They go right from CTTE to RSOG.
Plus you get to hear Jon begging them to stay and put up with
Topographic Oceans-- and you wonder why they don't want to
play this stuff on stage again? |

The Boston Tea-FTO Party
Boston Gardens
Boston, MA
26-Feb-1974
Source: newly discovered (2003) alternate recording
Transferred by: jb and mp
Mastered by: smt, January 2004
Art: smt
Lineage: audio tape > audio CD > SHN > Sound Forge > FLAC
A complete recording of this show has been around for years, but this
better-sounding alternate recording was discovered only in late 2003. It
is a fuller-sounding recording than the more common one, but has two gaps
- one in The Revealing Science of God (disk 1 track 5), and another in
Ritual (disk 2 track 3). I patched both missing parts with the common
recording, carefully adjusting itch, EQ, and channel balance to make the
different source unobtrusive. Sound Forge Acoustic Mirror was used to give a wider spatial effect than the pure mono source recording.
Yes plays with a full head of steam on this night. Anticipation grows
during the Firebird Suite, and Siberian Khatru blasts forward almost uncontrollably. Judging from what Jon Anderson later says, the concert must have started late, and he asks people to stay and listen to the "new album." |

Warning/Disclaimer: This recording should not be confused with the series labelled "The Dan Lampinski Tapes Volume XX". This recording represents part of Dan's earliest efforts to capture the live concert experience for posterity, hence the series name "Dan Lampinski - The Early Years Volume XX". Given the very consistent high quality of Dan's later work, it would have been easy to blow off these recordings and consign them to the dustbin of history, but there are quite a few captures in the series that are well worth circulating, if not for their rarity, but for the obsessive collector types (we know who we are) that want every single second of any recordings of their favourite musicians. So please, just accept these recordings for what they are, another part of the tapestry we weave when we collect and share such things.
Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.
Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.
The transfers are available as 16bit/44.1KHz flac files suitable for CD burning, and also as 24bit/96KHz flac files for those who prefer the higher resolution.
Always remember - the more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you.

Patches are used from the higher gen tape of the same source tape (with MUCH more bass response) in between 'The Remembering' and 'The Ancient,' and immediately following 'Ritual' and through the encore. |
