Note: I had three different versions of this show to choose from for the transfer, none of which has a definitively known lineage. This show was mastered on cassette either by Mouse (the band's then soundman) or else by McCabe's staff and has circulated on cassette for several years. I had two different CDR versions, both of which were made from a cassette of unknown generation and lineage. I also had borrowed Glenn Steinkamp's cassette version of this show several years back and had transfered it to DAT. Glenn has been a trading friend for years and while we don't know the exact lineage of his cassette source, his is likely fairly close to the master as he has been collecting Los Lobos recordings since the mid-80's and at the time he got this recording, it likely had not "been around the block" very much.
All three versions suffered from varies degrees of the same problems, including fluctuating sound levels, sound sporadically drifting back and forth between channels and numerous pops throughout the show. The sound level and drifting problems were similar on all three sources and likely present on the cassette master as well. The magnitude of the pops varied on each of the three sources, with Glenn's cassette copy seeming to have the fewest of the bunch. The origin of these pops is unknown but I assume they also are present on the master and possibly are due to a faulty cable or some sort of sporadic grounding problem.
I used Sound Forge to even out the signal where necessary and also to remove as many of the pops as I could locate. The pops were discrete enough that no audible music was lost when they were removed. Hopefully someday I'll actually track down the master recording from this show but in the meanwhile this version is a very enjoyable recording of a great early acoustic set. Enjoy! |
