One for the history books. There’s a copy of the guest list that’s been on the ‘net for a while. I’ll include it and post it in a comment. This show was on the Monday immediately following that year’s Tibet Festival. I think everyone that played that fest wanted on the guest list and got in. The place was *packed* to the point that it probably should have been shut down by the Fire Marshall. Thankfully they didn’t, but it was *hot* in there. My ex couldn’t handle it and spent most of the show in the corridor with the merch people. I stayed and spent most of the show trying not to have Matt Pinfield sweat on me too much. He and a contingent from MTV were standing right behind me.
OK Computer wouldn’t be released for almost a month. For most of the audience this was the first time hearing a lot of these songs. When Thom announces Paranoid and the crowd responds, some woman says to no-one in particular, “How does anybody know this song?” I respond, “The video was shown two weeks ago, and it’s been out for a week.” I knew some of the new songs as I’d been buying every import single I could find. They have b-sides better than some album tracks.
I’ll be the first to admit the improvement due to the matrix is subtle. The CSC/DAT source is already pretty great. I do think my crappy little rig captured more of the high-end. The compression raised the floor of the quieter moments. And the signal to noise ratio is improved.
