Notes: sony 54p's [2006-10-20] The TC gives this performance very high marks, noting that since it only circs in aud that it doesn't get the credit its due. I heartily agree. Here are some comments from the Archive "this show has great energy from beguinning to end. awesome 1st set with the most intense LL>supplication i've ever heard, bobby sounds great... i love keith's solos in TLEO from '78, this one is especially groovy and surly in a keith sort of way. it isn't perfect, but i think this show has even more charisma than both the following Red Rocks shows." ..." Sizzling Sugaree and check out the monster LL>Supplication. First set packs a nice punch and has all the same licks of the Red Rocks run starting 2 days hence.... Set II has a blockbuster go off in SOF which sets up an incandescent Estimated - Folks this is one of the best if not the best I have heard from '78 no lie. The jam is ripping and goes on forever. ...They never let up and Jerry steps right in with the wawa and flanger in an eery and fast jam. Great Wharf Rat and the HANDS DOWN BEST OF '78 TRUCKIN into a great Iko with a wailing Donna the crowd does not know what to make of this and thinks its NFA remember this had been played 8X since 5/15/77 St. Louis." I think the aud tape is fast (check out Lazy Lightnin), but the pitch isn't as off as what I would think from the speed. Maybe this is why it sounds good. The set 2 jam of Estimated > EOTW > Phil/Drums > Drums > Space > WR > Truckin > Iko is very well played. Garcia is playing in a jazzy style with the 78 grunge sound with not wankery. Set 1 is similar in style with songs typical of this time. It avoids some tunes in rotation that don't engage me so that's another reason I like the show. Hopefully it can be re-transferred with no speed issues.

Definitely an interesting show - so far these July shows are all better than average with some Garcia grunge playing. Check it out for its somewhat unusual uptempo delivery.
