On Thursday Sept. 18, 1997 the Stones did a surprise pre-tour gig at the Double Door, a small club in Chicago that normally features alternative music rock bands.
The decision to do the Double Door club gig wasn't made until midnight the day before, on Wednesday. Hard core fans with contacts jumped in their cars to rush into Chicago. At 9 AM in the morning they put up a sign outside the Double Door simply saying The Rolling Stones. They charged $7 per ticket to get in -- you had to show an ID card, and they wrote your name on the armwrist band that was put on each ticketholder's hand to prevent scalping .
Only 400 people were let in -- actually 100 less than the club can hold, but the Stones management wanted space for TV and radio equipment as well. Due to the crazy mood and lights from the camera setup, the club temperature got to the boiling point. Another 1000 people were in the street outside. The club door was open, and people outside could actually see parts of the stage, and hear the music very well.
Why do I like this boot so much? This is garage band Rolling Stones. Straight-forward rock and roll, without the theatrics. The backup singers really can't be heard, the horns are at a minimum, the guitars blaze. And the crowd! What a trip. Be warned -- this is very much an audience recording, and the crowd is absolutely wild. This is a party. You can hear the Stones loud and clear, but when you listen to this boot, you are in the crowd. You're there.
