Star Spangled Banner http://www.bootlegarchive.com/media_description.asp?MediaID=275 http://www.digitalhighway.co.uk/axis/reviews/1085.asp From Chris Dixon's 30th Anniversary Series ? C S Dixon January 9th, 1999 marks 30 years since the Experience's pair of shows at the Konserthuset in Stockholm, Sweden. These shows circulate widely as they survive in pristine soundboard quality. This is one of the best quality recordings of the Experience period (ah, IMO) but the shows themselves are quite uneven performance-wise. In general, the first show is a bit lackluster but the band manages to rally 'round in the second for the most part. This first show was also filmed and this too circulates widely. The video shows Jimi looking subdued, not so much actively pissed off as... disinterested. Maybe he was tired, maybe put off by the camera in his face or the odd gear/tuning glitch (the previous nights 'squeal' is back), who knows? Anyway, not to say the shows don't have their moments but ironic that one of his best documented shows is below par but whatcha gonna do.... (1st show setlist): Killing Floor; Spanish Castle Magic; Fire; Hey Joe; Voodoo Child (SR); Red House; Sunshine of Your Love 'Killing Floor' makes its final documented Experience appearance (say it three times fast!) here. We don't hear another tape of this until 9/70 with the COL band. Jimi prefaces it by saying "we'll only be playing oldies but baddies..since we haven't played in 6 weeks". Not exactly true as they'd done 'Lulu' earlier in the week and Gothenburg the night before, but he does appear to know at the outset that they'll be a little off for this one .... Introduces 'SCM' as being recorded in 1733 at good ol' Ben Franklin studios. Jimi skips some of the words. There's some nice moments in the solo but none of the extra 'movements' of the previous versions. As on the previous night, he doesn't return to the verse ("Hang on, my darling..." . Jimi starts the 'Fire' riff without the others and experiments with a few variations before they settle in. Skips some words here, too (part of first verse, "move over Rover"...) 'Hey Joe' is without extended intro this night. Words muddled and skipped here, too. After explaining yet again that he's forgotten the words to 'Watchtower' in response to requests, he offers VC(SR) instead. He drops out for a drum solo (gtr trouble again) but rallies for some slightly more spirited soloing just before the end. Jimi starts 'Red House' in the wrong key but recovers quickly. Starts singing the final verse before the end of the preceeding 12 bars, confusing the hell out of Noel! Goes straight into 'SOYL'- as on quite a few show around this time, he uses the white Gibson SG/Les Paul for these two songs in sequence. Goes to a bass solo fairly early on. Jimi again mixes in a bit of 'Outside Woman Blues'. (2nd show setlist): I Don't Live Today; Spanish Castle Magic; Hey Joe; Voodoo Child (SR); Sunshine of Your Love; Red House; Fire; Purple Haze; Star Spangled Banner 'I Don't Live Today' rare, maybe even unique, as an opening number. Gets dedicated to the 'Second Front'. Amp squeals crop up again here. Jimi apologises for gear problems, saying it'll be a "bit loud" as they've got "English amps, Swedish power...Australian fuzztone and American guitars"...so it's a problem of diplomacy, then?? 'Spanish Castle' gets dedicated to the "...Band of Gypsys up there in the Amen section...". Could this be one of Jimi's first references to the band with which he would finish the year? Prophetic. A fairly quick version at a little over 5 min (compare to 11+ min. the night before!). 'Hey Joe' regains the extended intro. Some clever 'tapped' guitar licks there, also a snatch of 'Taps'. Jimi takes an extra verse of solo, then starts singing over the chromatic gtr/bass unison line that usually prefaces the final verses. 'Voodoo Child (SR)' one of the show highlights IMO, featuring a breakdown to a very nice guitar solo interlude at around the 9 min. mark. Features some country-style licks, and he even slips in a sly quote from 'Day Tripper'! Jimi baubles the words to Red House' a bit but some nice playing (as usual!) here as well. Middle section just features three verses of straight soloing then back to the final verse, skipping the percussive chordal bit and free-time sections of recent renditions. SSB an appropriate coda, the shows having been dedicated to American draft resistors..... A long night for Jimi to be sure.
