I know the parties involved and am trying to gather more information re: source and transfer... The storyline behind this surprise show in San Francisco was the premiere of Jim Jarmusch's film "Year of the Horse" which was happening elsewhere in the city that evening. Neil had just kicked down a whole series of stealth shows the previous spring at the Old Princeton Landing near Half Moon Bay and Catalyst in Santa Cruz. Rolling the dice that this movie premiere would "turn into a stealth concert", my friend and I trekked down from Humboldt County to take our chances. We were in Santa Cruz when the call came that Crazy Horse WAS playing that night and tickets were going on sale at 3pm only from the venue box office. That was only in 45 minutes time and San Francisco is approximately 80 miles of traffic infested driving from Santa Cruz. Holy Shit! We hauled ass up there and made it at 3:30 freaking out that we were too late... Only a small line was outside the Trocadero and sure enough we found out there were still plenty of tix left at 20$ a pop. We were IN! (Venue capacity was in the neighborhood 500-700)... we then made our way over to the theater showing the movie premiere and sold our movie tickets out front laughing at our amazing good luck to instead be seeing the REAL thing. By showtime the Troc was packed and the energy level was going through the roof. The band comes out of the gates loose but intensely rocking with several tunes that have false starts much to the bemusement of Mr. Young. After "Piece of Crap" Neil remarks "well at least we got that ONE right" ....The setlist is quite unique for NYCH and featured rarely played tunes from the Mirror Ball album as well as various older nuggets such as Mellow my Mind and Razor Love. This along with a Catalyst gig (5.19.97) were intended as a warm up gigs for Crazy Horse's planned tour of Europe (prior to Horde tour that summer). The Europe tour got scrubbed after Neil cut his hand with a knife 2 weeks later. DVD Notes: this video recording was heavily stealthed and as a result certain songs are cut or missing --first song "Hard Luck Stories" is missing entirely --second tune "Im the Ocean" video fades in part way through the song and camera is being adjusted throughout --camera is concealed during first tune of second set "Hey Hey My My" as security approached...audio continues and video returns at beginning of "Slip Away"...videoman moved from balcony to a new location for remainder of show that allowed improved camera angles and closeups --overall quality of this heavily stealthed video is very very good considering (A-rating); some bumpy spots especially in beginning --the schoeps audio is an obvious upgrade to the camera mics alone and as a result was synched over the existing video. Audio quality is A- After waiting 9 years for this to be transferred I have to say that it was well worth the wait. ENJOY!
