Notes: Thanks Tim! [following comments not mine] Waits' collaboration with Robert Wilson for the theatrical production of "Alice." Many of these early demo songs are included in the 2002 release of "Alice" but sound very different. Very pared down from the slicker, official "Alice." A must-have for true Waits Fans

Instrumentals 1-10 Waits did a musical in 89, for which William S. Burroughs wrote the lyrics and (forgot the first name) Wilson the stage design. It was premiered in my Hamburg and called The Black Rider. For this one Waits eventually released his demos years later. In 92, Wilson & Waits did another musical together, w/o Burroughs this time but again premiered in Hamburg. Called Alice and based on Alice in Wonderland of course (Black Rider was based on the old folktale which was also the source for the very popular opera Der Freischuetz bei Carl Maria von Weber). Unlike the BR, Waits never released a single song of this. This is what this bootleg is :) Waits has now done a new musical with Wilson again which will be debuted in Copenhagen next year. No idea what it's called. And Wilson also did two more musical in Hamburg for which Lou Reed wrote the music.

Interlude 13 [= instrumental, studio rehearsals] 27. Down the Reeperbahn (full cast version) [studio rehearsals. TW giving directions] 28. Goodbye [= instrumental, studio rehearsals] Total running time: 79:17 Notes: This CD contains the Demo-Recordings of the Musical "Alice", recorded in Hamburg, Germany, 1992. The origins of these studio recordings (which were never meant to be released) are unknown, but "apparently" the tapes might have been stolen from Waits' car in late 1992 ;o)) The "PMS" version contains four more tracks (24, 26, 27, 28) than the 74 min bootleg CD "Alice: The Original Demos". t08 is a shorter version of t06. However, the four extra tracks are not taken from a "studio" source, they were actually recorded during cast rehearsals with a mic on stage or from the audience. Reworked version of most of these demos has been officially released in 2002 under the title "Alice" (ANTI/EPITAPH 86632-2). Keys: * Reworked version of the song has been officially released on CD "Alice" (?2002 ANTI/EPITAPH 86632-2). ** Same version (take & mix) has been officially released on CD "Alice" (?2002 ANTI/EPITAPH 86632-2). *** Unreleased t02, t18, t25 are instrumental pieces and have been released in the official 2002 CD "Alice" but NOT in their instrumental form (that's why I considered them as "unreleased"). The three pieces will give the songs "Fish & Bird", "No one knows i'm gone" and "Barcarolle". Flaw: there's a 0.5sec gap at 0:21 of t25 "Untitled" (this is on original, it is also on "Alice: The Original Demos") < compiled by liveman on 7-31-2003 >
