Notes: John Coltrane Quintet Newport Jazz Festival Newport, RI 07-01-61 This is my personal thank you for all the great shows I received from this site. Also, an invitation for some of you to post something really rare this week. We all need to hear this. This is TraneÕs holy grail missing Newport show from 1961. I recently located my master cassette that I transferred from a reel to reel master mono soundboard back in the late 70Õs. I figured that I would give my Nakamichi a try on this recording and go straight into my Phillips CRD with no EQ or messing. This recording has such an intimate feel, you can hear Trane tap in the count for Impressions and you can image the sitting on the wood floor on stage listening to this show. You can hear the squeak of ElvinÕs hi hat during Naima. Remember this is a recording from 1961. Trane used two bassists on this show, Art Davis and Reggie Workman and hadn't settle on Jimmy Garrison yet but McCoy and Elvin are here. The announcer introduces the first song as So What but Trane rips into Impressions instead. IÕve never traded this show but itÕs time for everyone to hear it. ItÕs a shame there isnÕt more. Happy New Year and please keep sharing your rare stuff. Enjoy Total Time: 27:44 min. 1. Introductions 01:24 2. Impressions 06:10 3. Naima 04:11 4.
