Here's another proshot video that was REALLY helped out by modern technology. I've long known this was a good show and have watched this video a little bit over the years, but was always fatigued afterwards because of the excessive video crapola...lots of horizontal offset and the tape had enough gens that the sound wasn't all that great either. After running this tape through the new box, it's like a breath of fresh air! You can see from the screensot that the video is still not crystal clean and new looking, but it's not bad at all and SBD audio shines pretty brightly on this. Everyone will enjoy this one, I'm sure...I know I am.

Notes: There's been considerable discussion over the years about the content and setlist of the early and late shows from this night. Early tapes that circulated apparently mixed the show setlists a bit and have made it difficult to know exactly what the setlist was for each show. Plus, if I recall correctly (some of these discussions happened over ten years ago, so my memory is a little dim), there may have been some tapes circulating that claimed songs from this night, but obviously the recording was from a different night (based on sound dynamics of the recording). So, it's just been difficult to pin down the exact setlist from these two shows with a high degree of confidence.
As an example, the SRV gigdatabase (which I largely helped to compile initially but has evolved since) has the early show opening with Testify and then moving into the Scuttlebuttin' Variation and on through the same setlist that is on this DVD. However, in the very first 15 seconds or so of this video Stevie is on stage tuning and greets the crowd with a 'hello' and it's pretty obvious that the show is just starting with the Scuttlebuttin' Variation thing. I did have to cut this short part from the DVD because there are some pretty loud pops and noise on the tape, so I cut that portion because it's just before the start of the first song and I didn't want to destroy anyones speakers or eardrums. So, I can't be 100% certain, but judging from this short segment that was cut out, I'm pretty darn sure that this DVD starts from the beginning of the show.
Unfortunately, this copy does not include the complete show as it cuts part way through Lenny. I really don't know if the whole show exists, but I do recall inquiring years ago of people that had this on their trade-lists and nobody that I checked with had more than I have.
Another unsolved mystery is whether or not video exists of the second show. I remember emailing with someone years and years ago that said they remembered seeing footage with Bob Margolin from the Wax Museum (or possibly they owned it but had it stashed, which is entirely possible). So, it's possible that the whole night exists out there on tape somewhere, but I unfortunately can only provide the first hour. Thinking about it, it really makes sense that there would be the entire night covered since the part that's here is proshot with SBD audio. It doesn't make sense that only a portion of a show would be professionally recorded. |
