Notes: From: David A. Finney [[email protected]] Sent: Friday, April 21, 2000 7:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Hosting Request gd74-10-20 I just got this show from the Frank's Picks round 4 tree. This date has apparently not yet been circulated on etree, so I'll upload it to your site if you'd like it. The tree also included 10-18 and 10-19, but these seem to have been circulated already. If anyone feels that these copies should be cuirculated as well, I'm happy to oblige. from the web page (http://frankspicks.org/fp4_Source_tape_info.htm): <snip> From: Rob Bertrando Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 17:17:22 -0800 Subject: Oct 1974 Winterland AUDs The best sounding AUDs of this run (all 5 nights) were made by Charles Conner (sp?), using a Sony ECM-22P into a highly modified Sony mono portable. There is occasional wow/flutter, but the frequency response is great, and the hiss low. I started the distribution of the "audiency"-sounding SBDs of the last three nights, in late 1976. They came to me on cassette, from Jerry Wexler's (of Atlantic Records fame) son or nephew, I forget the exact connection. I and about 4 others copied them to reel at that time, and copies have flowed since. Much more recently, SBDs of the 16th and 17th have surfaced, without the audience mix. I don't know if anyone has similar mixes of the last three nights for trade or listening. </snip> Grateful Dead Winterland San Francisco, CA 10.20.74 sbd (thought to be rough mix tapes made for 'Steal Your Face' song selection) <soapbox> I already own 'Steal Your Face', both on vinyl and on CD. IMHO, it would show appropriate support for a band that is so generous with their copyrighted material for parties interested in this show to buy/already own a copy of 'Steal Your Face' as well. Notes: sbd [2006-08-10] Set 1 again generally mild. Brokedown Palace was the best tune in my listening. Set 2 has some interesting jamming in PITB but the extensive drummer duets etc with Mickey back are background music. Mix is ok. The segue into Wharf Rat and the song itself are on teh must hearonce list because I think Lagin adds some nice funky piano which puts a little hitch into the song's cadence which is just plain cool. This is also done in a fashion on the Good Lovin' which continues the funky jamming with Garcia doing some nice slide. The Phil and Ned is very "electronic" and not too scratchy.

Nice sound and interesting mix.
