Notes: | sbd cribbs [2007-04-17]Nice sound quality and a very together performance. Maybe being in a low key place allowed the band to play a bit differently this night. Nice sound quality. From the Archive comments "A, but the boys take a detour into an unsual Phil solo with drums. A mellow NFA (also similar to those in '76) ensues with some great work by Jerry. This winds down into an evocative Black Peter, which plays the role that Wharf Rat usually does. The Dead wrap it up with respectably rocking Sugar Magnolia and Saturday night.....lthough 1977 was a year of consistant great shows, it's May and October that for me, the Dead were really at their peak. This one and 10/2 stand out in particular. The 1st Set is long and features nice performances from Jerry on Dire Wolf and Roses, plus a well-jammed Let it Grow. Set 2 just smokes from start to finish. The long Estimated>Eyes jam evolves into an early Space, before launching into another great 77 St. Stephen>NFA pairing. Then Jerry pulls out a rare Black Peter (only 6 in 77) and brings the house down. One to add to your 1977 collection for sure!....People, this is kharmic ground-zero for me. While I grew up in Northern California, my parents were both from DeKalb, IL. I used to spend all my summers back there. Eating big juicy peaches. Corn picked, boiled and eaten all within 30 minutes. Aunt Izzy's pies. Catching fire-flies in glass jars after the sun went down. This is my personal mythology, and it is an essential component of my world-view. I have not been in Illinois since 1976, and certainly did not see this show. But hearing this music, and realizing that the boys set up their equipment and howled at the moon in DeKalb means a lot to me. We've all got our favorite shows for any number of different reasons. In this case, the performance is top-shelf 1977 vibe, with more energy than most. However, it is the convergence of a peak performance with my personal history that makes this a top 10 all-time favorite for me. Even if your grandmother didn't bake you sugar cookies in DeKalb, you'll still have your mind blown with "Friend of the Devil", "Estimated Prophet" > "Eyes of the World" > "Space" > "St. Stephen". Holy sh!t, Batman, this is some good stuff. DL a lifelong pal with this show."

Notes: | Steve Maizner, Sony ECM-990s>Sony TC-158 mastering by Jack Warner. Overall sound B+ quality but there sounds to be a lot of "tape deterioration" so I drop it down a 1/3 grade. Set 1 Let It Grow jammed out. The Estimated > Eyes segue not as smooth as I would have liked. To my ears the different gears for these tunes caused the spacey groove jam in estimated to be cut too fast. The TC has the opposite opinion on this one. [2007-04-17]I changed my original opinion of the sound - its a very nice aud for this time and the show has unusually high energy and spunkiness. The jam after jam (aka space) is very nice.
