Notes: | Any Rolling Stones tour of the 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s was bound to turn up in a lot of bootlegs, but their Some Girls tour of 1978 was bootlegged even more thoroughly than most. To understand why it enjoyed so much attention from bootleggers, you have to understand the enthusiasm that surrounded the Some Girls tour. After a series of albums that were decent but not great (including Goats Head Soup in 1973, It's Only Rock 'N Roll in 1974, and Black and Blue in 1976), the Stones truly excelled on 1978's Some Girls ? a focused, confident, gutsy gem that was rightly hailed as their best album since 1972's classic Exile on Main St. So when the Stones hit the road in support of Some Girls, bootleggers made a point of doing even more taping than usual. One of the best-sounding bootlegs that resulted from that tour was Garden State '78, which was recorded at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ, on June 14, 1978, and documents the Stones' third stop on the tour. Recorded from the venue's soundboard, this two-LP set boasts superb sound quality ? and the word "superb" also describes the Stones' performances. Eight of the set's 19 songs are from Some Girls; the only songs on that album that they don't perform are the title song and "Before They Make Me Run." The Stones must have loved the fact that "Miss You," "When the Whip Comes Down," "Shattered," and other Some Girls gems went over as well as classics like "Street Fighting Man," "Brown Sugar," "Honky Tonk Woman," and "Tumbling Dice." When Garden State '78 turned up at vinyl swap meets in the late '70s, collectors were impressed by both the sound quality and the performances ? not surprisingly, copies went quickly.

Street fighting man ( 3:56 ) (88:59) Review From STONES FAQ : Excellent stereo soundboard recording; probably the most well known boot of the tour. Legend has it the tape was stolen from the soundboard before the show ended which explains why the end is missing. Good performance except the incomplete encore "Street Fighting Man" sounds completely unrehearsed; it's terrible. Original LPs sound better than any CD release; in fact The Swingin' Pig "Out on Bail" and Scorpio's "Capital Connection" both appear to be dubbed from vinyl. 10th June - 26th July: THE ROLLING STONES. Notes: | Mike's notes - While it's close , and this is certainly excellent, I think "Garden State 78" sounds just a little better. __________________________________________________ The Rolling Stones Capitol Theater, Passaic, New Jersey 14 June 1978 EX FM recording CONTRAST CLAUSE : This is a de-clicked version of the album that was uploaded here. Torrent #334121 The Rolling Stones ~ GARDEN STATE 78 (double album vinyl rip) [SMILIN' DORK RECORD] Passaic, New Jersey, June 14, 1978 (EX.Sound) http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=334121 Minor alterations were carried out - shifting the balance over (using Audacity) and decreasing gain in order for to avoid such amendments going 'into the red'. Minor widening of the stereo image (using the mda_image plug-in) on the tracks where the signal / recording went to much more narrow stereo. The above adjustments varied per track hence providing a complete list of the minor variation per track on the above adjustments would look rather silly. De-clicking carried out using Click Repair. CD 1 46 Minutes 01 Let It Rock 02 All Down The Line 03 Honky Tonk Women 04 Starfucker 05 When The Whip Comes Down 06 Miss You declicked 07 Just My Imagination 08 Lies 09 Beast Of Burden CD 2 46 Minutes 10 Respectable 11 Far Away Eyes 12 Love In vain - Band Introductions 13 Shattered 14 Sweet Little Sixteen 15 Tumbling Dice 16 Happy 17 Brown Sugar 18 Jumping Jack Flash 19 Street Fighting Man I de-clicked this for myself...little more I can say really apart from I always thought the CD was great, now I like this even better! Thanks to - for uploading the LP version. On the vast majority of tracks the click removal worked a treat. On some (notably Honky Tonk Women), the odd click was still audible : I elected not to change the settings for 'tougher' click removal, as I was wary that such treatments can end up removing some of the ambience or worse, the music. The clicks that were still audible were more minor tuts in the background, and the most scratch laden tracks sounded a lot better, so I was happy. I think this is amongst the Stones' best performances, so enjoy.
