Notes: Originally known as Warsaw, this Manchester post-punk outfit comprised Ian Curtis (Vocals), Bernard Dicken/Albrecht (Guitar, Vocals), Peter Hook (Bass) and Steven Morris (Drums). Named after the prostitution wing of a concentration camp, Joy Division emerged in 1978 as one of the most important bands of their era. With Morris' drums employed as a lead instrument, backed by the leaden but compulsive bass lines of Hook, the sound of Joy Division was distinctive and disturbing. It was clear the band was contemptuous of anything resembling rock orthodoxy and were determined to mine a completely original sound. Much of the attention the band garnered centered on the charismatic Curtis, who was renowned for his neurotic choreography, resembling a demented marionette on wires. Curtis sang lyrics of unrelieved alienation and impending doom without humor or objectivity. His is a world of obsessive-compulsive self-loathing and adolescent angst unable to make the transfer to adult world of responsibility and foresight. He suffered from epilepsy and was known to experience fits while performing which led to his deteriorating mental state. The illness seemed to worsen with the band's increasingly demanding live schedule and on 18 May 1980, the eve of Joy Division's proposed visit to America, Ian Curtis was found hanged. The verdict was suicide. Within months of the Curtis tragedy, the remaining members sought a fresh start as New Order, possibly sensing that Joy Division's kamikaze mission had been fulfilled. Drag, step, hair flop, drag, step, hair flop. Micro pops between tracks. A little hissy but still a good listen. TAO. Thanks a bunch Goth boy. Drag, step, hair flop, drag, step, hair flop... :-)
