This two CD set features a complete show from the 1977 Animals "In the Flesh" tour. It's notable for it's very good performance and the rare encore of 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene'. A song that hadn't been played for a few years at that time, and not played again until the Floyd reunion shows in '94 (w/o Roger). Roger Waters shows some real venom in 'Pigs' and 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond, parts VI-XI' which features some outstanding jamming. The bonus track 'Pigs On The Wing' is an 8-Track studio recording from the original 'Animals' sessions. 8-Track recordings can be played continously in order to seague from the end of the tape back to the beginning. The band recorded a version of 'Pigs On The Wing, pt.1' which is bridged by a guitar solo into Pigs On The Wing, pt.2'. The solo however is not played by Dave Gilmour but by Snowy White.

Notes: | Oh, the storied history of Animal Instincts... Ron Toon released AI (rev0) to the world sometime during the last millennia. Long before Harvested had a QA department. It was my discussions with Ron concerning the clicks, pops, and other glitches in AI (rev0) that led to my joining the team. One of my earliest contributions was to deglitch AI and the first rev A edition was released. As the years went by, a much lower generation source for this show emerged. My first knowledge of its existance was the RoIO Mr Pig. Although the SQ on Mr Pig was better than AI (you can hear many subtleties not detectable on AI revA), Mr Pig had other problems, like clipping, gaps during the tape flips, unbalanced, etc. So the thoughts of doing a rev B began. That was two years ago... About six months ago, we decided to do it. We got another source, a better source than Mr Pig. One that didn't have the clipping problem. Then Marc-Olivier went to work. Marc-Oliver spent quite sometime remastering this new source and expertly patching the tape flips. Then it was my turn. I recently finished doing the deglitching and sent a copy to Richard to start the weed. So here it is! Animal Instincts rev B (HRV-CDR-014) Pink Floyd recorded live at the Oakland Coliseumz May 9, 1977. Disc One: Sheep Pigs On The Wing (part 1) Dogs Pigs On The Wing (part 2) Pigs (Three Different Ones) Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 1-5) Welcome To The Machine Disc Two: Have A Cigar Wish You Were Here Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 6-9) Money Us And Them Careful With That Axe, Eugene For me, the highlight of this show is SoYCD6-9. It's the best version of this song ever. For those of you that already own a copy of AI, you know that a bonus track is included at the end of disc two. This being the studio version of Pigs on the Wing with Snowy White prviding a bridge between the two parts. AI rev0 and revA simple included a copy of this song as it was released on Snowy White's Goldtop CD. Well... We've changed this too for AI revB. Now you have the original version (the Pink Floyd mix) as it appeared on the original 8-track tapes, transferred to digital direct from an original 8-track tape. This version is different than the Goldtop version (the Snowy mix). Enjoy! Harvested is proud to once again provide the definitive edition of this classic performance.

The clarity and balance makes it possible to hear every note played perfectly and even the giggles between Roger Waters and David Gilmour in "Have A Cigar". This show was released several years ago as Mr. Pig which utilizes (so it was claimed) the first generation reel-to-reel masters. Highland uses compression and heavy equalization to bring out the high end on the tape making everything louder. Cannonball used a different tactic with this release. They didn't use the compression or any form of dressing up of the tape to make it sound much more natural and dynamic. The highs aren't as shrill as on the other one making it sound very nice. Furthermore the crowd reactions such as they are not as audible either. It could be that Cannonball has used the DAT clone of the master whereas Highland used the reel-to-reel copy of the master. Whatever the case might be this tape is the best sounding from this particular Pink Floyd tour and is essential. The Oakland crowd were well behaved enough to not throw firecrackers and upset Roger (how many times did he yell at audiences during this tour?) Both Animals and Wish You Were Here are played perfectly. David Gilmour in particular is on fire here. Of particular note is his solo in "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" where he throws in some middle-eastern scales adding an exotic oriental feel to the piece. A unique event in a Pink Floyd concert! To thank the well-behaved crowd the band reward the audience with the extra encore "Careful With That Axe Eugene", the only time the song was played during the tour and the final time ever by the full band. It's a short version and the scream isn't as blood curdling as in the past. It is however very nice to hear the mature band pulls out this early classic. (GS)

Notes: | *********************** Mike's notes- I still think "Animal Instincts Rev B" sounds a little better than this version . I stored this in the burned boots section of my hard drive, even though i never burned it , and i removed the tags to make room on my sonos .... *********************** SUP- recording by Reinhart Hohlwein 2496 Transfer by Bob Menkes Remaster by creamcheese OK, just another release from 1977-05-09. Did the world really need that? Not sure, but i did. I simply love this recording, this show and always wanted to have it in best possible quality. The first release i owned of this date was "plays the animals" and any of my friend then who had an equalizer had to lend it to me. God know how many attempts it did since. This (I hope) was the last. superb recording, superb transfer, superb utilities we have today. This one was basically EQd, detail was enhanced and then it was reduced to 16bit 44.1kHz (because there doesn´t happen anything above 22 kHz on this one). This one was seeded on the YEESHKUL Tracker in April this Year and now has to find way here... Cheers, creamcheese

Notes: | this was the best sounding audience recording of The Floyd from not only the Animals tour until the MOTB FOB Master Tapes sourced recording came out in 2009. This one's still a little different sounding and well worth it's own listen. I believe they all are sources from the same taper/recording though. Just way different generations, lineages, etc. Also, upon my further reading up on these sources, this version (along with all other versions other than MOTB) has a little EQ applied to it, making for a different sounding high-end and an overall less 'true to the source' replica of the original recording. ************************************************************************************************************************** Pink Floyd Alameda Coliseum Oakland, California 1977-05-09 Source: "Welcome To The Machine" (Cannonball) Lineage: Silver>CDWave>Flac6 Extraoridinary SQ on this recording. Notes: | This source of this much-traded/bootlegged show is by far the best. It probably will never be topped outside of an official release coming from the band's record company. I've now owned four different versions (Cannonball's 2007 "Welcome To The Machine"; Harvested's "Animal Instincts" (HRV014); and Great Dane Records' "In The Flesh" from the 90s) of this thing and this is the one to keep. "Animal Instincts" does have a splice for the cut in "Pigs" though, whereas this version only edits the cut out, causing a very hard to hear error in the timing of the song's bars at that point. * * MOTB Release: 0053 16/44.1 Release Date: 2009-01-29 Special: Rhinotrocity #13 Band: Pink Floyd Date: 1977-05-09 (Monday) Venue: Oakland / Alameda Coliseum Location: Oakland, Ca.
