Concert # 39 with the 9th Never-Ending Tour Band: Bob Dylan (vocal & guitar), Bucky Baxter (pedal steel guitar & electric slide guitar), John Jackson (guitar), Tony Garnier (bass), Winston Watson (drums & percussion). 1, 8-11, 17 acoustic with the band. 1, 8 Bucky Baxter (accordion). 6, 9-11, 17 Bob Dylan harmonica. NOTES: Some track transitions are not entirely seamless D1 T10: [11:10 - 11:30] dead runoff D2 T7: [11:16 - 11:36] dead runoff SOUND: As most of these July shows are, this is in, well, pretty righteous sound. This one is balanced well enough, but the vocals and high end start to break up when Bob or the band really go for it. The electric tunes tend to sound more compressed than the slower numbers. Overall still a very solid B, and the sound even manages to improve slightly in the second half. COMMENTS: So most of these setlists are almost identical, but the hidden blessing in that is we get to hear how Bob continues to shape the songs, and his own performance. Actually, we get some changes tonight, Shelter and Hattie Carroll are pretty rare. I only notice how things used to be after they're changed, why is that? Anyway, Mobile is good tonight, Bob is taking care to pronounce the lyrics. There seems to be a lack of energy here. The band is going through the motions a bit, Just Like a Woman is a clunker and Bob tries to inject some fun in Tangled but the band limps along. Hey, maybe a scarcely played Shelter From the Storm will perk things up...maybe not. Bob is slurring the first part of the lyrics and yelling the second part, never a good combination. And we all know when he's interested that means...he plays King of the Schoolyard and hogs all the solo time. Ah, forget it. Nice enough harp solo but this is boring. They stumble over the start of River Flow and play catch up the rest of the way. Folks, not even Tomorrow Night can save this show. Bob shrills his way through the song, lumbering like a drunk dinosaur who knows how to get sounds from a guitar. Hattie Carroll is still dead, and Willie Z. is still guilty. Bob gets off a couple phrasing delights [read: machine gun delivery] but...I don't know, the coolest thing about the entire song is Bob's little sign-off guitar work at the very end. Happily the second half the band wakes up. If I had to pick a turning point I'd say it's the longer-than-usual chugging to Cat's In the Well. After that they're off to the races. The bad thing is that Bob now has to compete with the newly charged-up band and ends up shouting more often than not. BOTTOM LINE: Average show (and that's perhaps being kind) in pretty good sound.
