SANTANA 1991-9-07 Santa Barbara County Bowl - 1st gen. VHS Hi-Fi > DVD video (stage right tripod camera with SBD + Sennheiser binaural mics live matrix mix audio - 120 min DVD-9 version
Santana
September 7, 1991
Santa Barbara County Bowl
Santa Barbara, California, USA
First gen. VHS Hi-Fi from tripod stage right Hi8 master with live matrix audio mix of soundboard plus Sennheiser binaural microphones on "dummy head" on the soundboard riser. Nice bright outdoor footage with lots of close ups at a great venue where the view from the stage adds to the experience. A DVD-5 version on two DVD's and a Flac file set are being seeded separately. This DVD-9 version besides having the entire show play continuously on one disc, has a slightly higher bit rate for the Dolby Digital audio (448 kbps versus 384 kbps - both DVD versions also have PCM audio as a choice.). There is a bit of hiss in the mix during quiet spots but it looks and sounds really good overall anyway. Please check the screen grabs and samples to get an idea for yourself of the quality.

Lineage: Hi8 master - tripod camera stage right > 1st gen. VHS Hi-Fi [TDK XP ST-160].

Audio exported to Pro Tools (minor "nip and tuck" edits, fades and normalization - no equalization or DNR). Audio placed back into Final Cut Pro before Compressor down-sampling.
Video attributes: NTSC 720x480 VBR 7.7 Mbps peak, 6.2 Mbps average data rate, 2-pass.
Audio - choice of: Dolby Digital 2/0 (L,R), 48 kHz sample rate, 448 kbps data rate

Note: The video is silent crowd shots for the first 12 seconds of DVD#1 and then the show starts about 10 or 15 seconds after that. There is also a video dropout for about 3 seconds at 1:54:56. (The audio does not dropout at that spot).
