Notes: Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble July 17, 1986 Austin Opera House, Austin TX *Officially released tracks removed* Soundboard multi-track recording 2" reel>Maxell XL-IIS Cassette?>Creative>CDR>Wav>EAC New transfer for this torrent Sound quality: Excellent, samples provided At least a dozen years ago, I learned that a recording studio in Kansas City still had a 2" reel of one of the shows used in the making of the album "Live Alive." Stevie and the band used several studios as they overdubbed tracks to finish this album. I have no idea if this was a safety reel of some sort, but it was the raw tracks, not the overdubbed version. What you hear is what was actually recorded from the stage that night. That is both the good news and the bad news. Now, don't let my comments here scare you off! I just believe in full disclosure! 1986 found Stevie a complete and utter wreck and there are few truly good performances from that year in my opinion. Stevie was in his hometown and still operating under the notion that one could make a great live album by playing as loaded as possible, which he clearly is on this recording. If nothing else, this music might help you learn not to play guitar or sing while fully loaded if you are taping from the board. In my opinion, Stevie's greatest legacy was his message of the ability for people to change. He showed it was possible to sober up and still play with great soul. Thanks for that Stevie! So, here it is, the good, the bad, and the ugly! SRV fans will still enjoy this. There are definitely some good moments and it sounds better here than on the final album does to my ears. This was supposedly recorded from the reels to this cassette, but I suspect that there was a cassette copy between the reels and this copy. Setlist included in this torrent: 1. Scuttle Buttin'> 2. Say What 3. Ain't Gone 'n give up on love 4. Looking out the window 5. Mary had a little Lamb 6. Pride & Joy 7. Come On, Pt. III 8. Change it jam (ending section only) 9. Rude Mood 10. Texas Flood 11. Voodoo Chile (a slight return) 12. Stang's Swang 13. Look at little sister (2nd version with horns) 14. Testify Songs from 4 shows were used for the "Live Alive" album. There is no published record of which I am aware that details the respective location and date of each track. Because the 6-string bass is present on this recording, I have concluded that it is from July 17, 1986. Many, many overdubs were used to produce the final album. Some of them are fairly obvious, some are not. According to interviews, even complete drum parts are overdubbed on some songs. This makes identifying the dates/venues of the source material more difficult. Although a simple audio comparison would seem easy enough, it isn't due to the remixing/overdub/post-production processes. I think I have successfully identified the songs that may have come from this particular show; and I have removed these from this torrent. If you were to listen to the tracks that were removed, it is doubtful you would recognize most of them as being the source material for "Live Alive." I've always wondered why they didn't just use other shows instead of overdubbing over weak performances. The following songs, listed by track number on the original tape, were removed: Track 5, Look at little sister (version 1, 2 were played this night) Track 9 Willie the Wimp Track 10 Change it Track 11 Lovestruck baby Note that I renamed the tracks in the torrent to avoid confusion. They are numbered consecutively. Band: Stevie Ray Vaughan - Gtr, voc Chris Layton - drums Tommy Shannon - bass Reese Wynans - gtr Unknown horns on track 13 Jimmie Vaughan played 6-string bass, I think he is only on track 13, but he might be elsewhere and I just forgot about it. Most of his performances are on deleted tracks.
