Our version is taken from a 1st generation tape off the TV station's master timecoded copy, and it certainly has the best colours, lines and stability. I've seen for this film so far.
The tape did have one small dropout around the 'Ikhnaton and Itsacon' section of 'Supper's Ready' which couldn't be patched as no other version looked similar enough! However, in general this film looks excellent.
In what I believe may be a first for a Genesis boot DVD, there are two versions available on the disc, one for the purists and one for people who might want something a little different!
The first version of the film is in the normal 4:3 format with the now-familiar timecode at the bottom.
This is being presented to you as it came out of the TV station archives, with no cropping or blurring of the timecode or other parts of the picture (except for the rough edges which always occur when transferring VHS tapes!)
You can even see at the left hand side where the effects guys didn't quite manage to cover the whole of the screen with their head-spinning bright colours and occasionally something unintended is visible (like Mike's arm during the opening
credits!)
The second version of the film has been "enhanced for your viewing pleasure"! First I removed the section at the bottom of the screen where the timecode sits, creating a more rectangular image, and it then struck me that this might be an opportunity to create our first 16:9 widescreen release. So by also removing a few pixels at the top of the screen and leaving the sides intact, I was able to get the picture into a true 16:9 shape. Setting the 16:9 flag on the original
MPEG-2 file made sure that the film would still appear in the correct aspect ratio on non-widescreen TVs, and give 4:3 TV owners the option to watch this film timecode-less, without having the picture horizontally squashed and a very tall, thin band!
Some people will love this, some will find it completely pointless! It was fun to do, though, so I thought as we had plenty of spare room on the disc it was worth a shot.
The audio was generally in great shape and comparison to the Hogweed release of this show revealed that the sound on the original VHS tape was superior, hence no redubbing was done. I boosted the volume as much as possible without introducing too much hiss, however audio remastering is not my strong point so it was otherwise left untouched.
The only section that was redubbed was the opening credits (Firth of Fifth instrumental) which had very poor audio on the original tape, so this was redubbed from the Audio CD. I only made sure it started and ended in roughly the same place as the original audio, so if anyone feels aggrieved that the picture of Tony Banks doesn't quite appear on the same snare hit or keyboard note that it did on the original film, my apologies! |
