Recorded in New York before the formation of Steely Dan, these songs are very rough and bare. Most of the songs were recorded at a Brill Building studio and financed by Kenny Vance of Jay and the Americans, Becker and Fagen's then employers. These songs feature only Becker and Fagen on piano, guitar and bass. A few of the tunes are played with a complete band. This band is Demian, the band Denny Dias started in Long Island, which Becker and Fagen joined in 1970. The vocalist on some of these tracks is Keith Thomas.
