Fair Audience Recording. "Can't Explain" track is very rough. Clicks and skips are all through it. Clicks persist into "Summertime Blues". The dialog between "Baba O' Riley" and "Behind Blue Eyes" is nearly inaudible. There is a tape skip at 1:39 of "Behind Blue Eyes". If there was any dialog between "Bargain" and "Won't Get Fooled Again", it has been omitted due to a tape cut. Tape cut after dialog after "Won't Get Fooled Again" until beginning of "Magic Bus". Loss of audio in "Magic Bus" from 7:42 until 7:48. There is an obvious edit after "Magic Bus" that makes you wonder. The same words that Roger uses after "Won't Get Fooled Again" are repeated to introduce "Relay". Tape problems in "Relay" from 4:12 until 4:15. Another glitch at 4:34. Tape glitch at the end of "There Ain't No Way Out" as it segues into "Naked Eye". Tape glitch at 0:56 of "Long Live Rock". Abrupt ending. Not sure if song was finished or not. |

Note: CD 1, tracks 1-4 and CD 2, track 1 painstakingly repaired by fellow “Whonatic” and audio expert Jon Hamm from March to July (!) 2010 due to being completely garbled and unlistenable on the original recording; also repaired is “The Relay” which had suffered from a few lesser dropouts; further minor clicks and drop-outs in other tracks also fixed.
Along with the "Who Is This" (presumably fake Rubber Dubber) vinyl bootleg that contains about half of the Munich 4, 1972 show, this show is easily the best sounding recording of the 1972 European tour - being only very slightly lesser than the first. I've always taken this show to my heart for its quality, its LONG & definite (to me, at least) "Bargain", its rarely played but great (and long) "Relay", its most interesting imaginable end-of-show medley with a real great "Naked Eye", a nascent "However Much I Booze" (based on the "Waspman" riff), and to top it all, with "Long Live Rock" as the perfect show closer.
When I compared the sound quality with Prof. Stoned's 2006 painstakingly speed-corrected, crackles & pops-removed etc. remaster of the aforementioned "Who Is This" boot LP, I noticed that the Copenhagen show dragged considerably. In order to finally have - and share with the commWHOnity - the best possible version of this beautiful show, I adjusted the speed to the Munich show's by speeding it up by 3,65% with the help of Audacity. At last, this outworldly show sounds as stunning as possible, IMVHO.
Can it get any better? Well, not as long as the original source for the "Who Is This" vinyl doesn't show up (and after almost 40 years of a no-show, I'd consider that rather unlikely), or The Who themselves find it in their hearts to come up with an official and complete soundboard recording of one of their 1972 show (there are hints that the Aug. 23, 1972 Stockholm might have been recorded by Who soundman Bobby Pridden).
What you could do though, and what I did for my private joy, is a matrix of the Munich and the Copenhagen shows which results in an almost perfect combo. Prof. Stoned's remaster was uploaded here to Dime twice already, once in 2006 by The Prof. himself, and in Feb. 2010 by yours truly as torrent #290449. Both have long dropped from the tracker, but I'm going to re-upload that show for you right after this in the light of the occasion. Note that a while back I had to erase my files from my HD so it won't be a classic re-seed but actually a re-upload/re-rip with new checksums etc..
So, for those who give a sh*t, here's my recipe for creating your personal Frankensteinian "Who In 72"- monster:
For CD 1, I took the complete first album side (five tracks) from Munich as the first four numbers on Copenhagen were originally garbled and still sound rough (more on that in the info to the previous two torrents), and added "Bargain" and "WGFA" from Copenhagen"; luckily, "Bargain" is mucho bettero on Copenhagen, BTW.
For CD 2, I again used the complete 2nd boot album side, as "Magic Bus" was also "dead" on Copenhagen, and that "Relay" suffered from some minor issues; also, the Munich "Relay" is the much better & longer version. Finally, I simply tacked on the remainder of the Copenhagen show (the medley of which is in turn much more interesting than the one they did in Munich). |
