Notes: a Mono audience recording from a first generation Reel Source: 1 Sennheiser 805 shotgun microphone > Uher 4000 1/2 track R2R Recorder @ 7 1/2 ips on 5" 3M Scotch tapes My Copy (1980's): 1/2 track 5" diameter Masters played back on Tandberg 9000X > Teac An-180 (Dolby) > Revox B-77 Transfer to DAT (1996): Revox B-77 > Teac AN-60 (Dolby) > Sony DTC-690 @ LP Transfer to Hard Drive (2012): Sony DTC-690 > Korg MR-2000s > Audiogate > Audacity > CD Wav > Flac (Level 8) > Stamp ID3 tag editor Transfer notes: The master tapes had to be flipped every 22-23 minutes (and that's not as easy as flipping a cassette over). Reduced bandwidth from DAT tape at Long Play speed (32 KHz sample rate has a max. freq. of 16 KHz). This tape was shrill so 18 dB was added at 200 Hz and 2 dB at 420 Hz to add some low end and balance the sound. There is a problem in the recording equipment creating intermittent ground jumps (bumping noises). Hundreds of these were removed but during the Midnight Rambler Jam > Locomotive Breath transition these noises became too numerous to remove without changing the speed of the recording and are still heard in the background. Additionally many small dropouts and loud claps were repaired or removed with Audacity wave editor.

Notes: My Copy (early 1980's): 1/2 track 5" diameter Masters played back on Tandberg 9000X > Teac An-180 (Dolby) > Revox B-77 Transfer to DAT (1996): Revox B-77 > Teac AN-60 (Dolby) > Sony DTC-690 @ LP Transfer to Hard Drive (2012): Sony DTC-690 > Korg MR-2000s > Audiogate > Audacity > CD Wav > Flac (Level 8) > Stamp ID3 tag editor Additional clean up and EQ (2016) iZotope RX4 advanced > Har-Bal 3.0 > CD Wav > TLH Transfer notes: The master tapes had to be flipped every 22-23 minutes (and that's not as easy as flipping a cassette over). Spliced so that you may not even notice where. Reduced bandwidth from DAT tape at Long Play speed (32 KHz sample rate has a max. freq. of 16 KHz). This tape was very shrill and the original attempt to combat this was by pushing the 200-400Hz band up by an amazing 18dB. Helped to add something down there but it went from shrill to hollow sounding. This time Har-Bal was used to balance the frequency spectrum adding some warmth and reducing the brittleness in the high end. There was a problem in the recording equipment creating intermittent thumping sounds. Maybe a poor connection made these noises but they were in the low frequency band so the eqaulization made them louder. Hundreds of these noises were attenuated just during the Midnight Rambler Jam > Locomotive Breath transition. Additionally hundreds of small tape dropouts and loud claps were individually masqued using an assortment of iZotope tools. Quite often just copy and paste from the opposite channel for the dropouts (it is mono). Much better without those technical issues distracting from an inspired performance. Thanks go out to Dub and Ken for this nice recording. For historical reference only and not intended for resale or any commercial use. enjoy -M- (December 2012) (Rev A - updated info page and artwork: March 2013 - iZotope RX4A repairs and Har-Bal EQ: March 2016) FLYING M PRODUCTIONS Fan Recordings for Collectors Trade Freely But Please Do Not Sell
