Recorded by GD
1st gen cassette provided by Finkployd49
Transfer by Neonknight
Remastering by MOB
Quality Control by RonToon
Artwork by Ediskrad Studios
Produced by Harvested Records
Lineage:
AKG mics & Uher reel-to-reel recorder > Europe Type I tapes > Technics RS-B965-M > Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 > Audacity 1.3 > FLAC (24bit/96kHz) > MOB Remastering > FLAC (16bit/44.1kHz)
This is a fabulous audience recording of the last of 4 consecutive nights in Paris during the In The Flesh 1977 tour. These Parisian concerts were performed at the Pavillon de Paris, which was a concert hall built at the place of an ancient slaughterhouse ("Abattoirs de la Villette" in French). The idea to bring the Animals Tour to a slaughterhouse is kind of ironic, hence the title of this release.
An excellent 1st gen tape provided by Finkployd49 was transferred by Neonknight in 2011, and the present Harvested release is a remastered version of this 1st gen tape transfer.
The remastering addressed mainly 3 aspects. First, on the rough transfer the speed was not consistent, the pitch increasing slightly as the show progressed. The speed of the first part of the Animals set is correct but it begins to accelerate during Dogs resulting in a 1.7% increase at the end of Pigs. A similar accelerating effect occurs for the second set, with 1.2% correction needed at the beginning of SOYCD 1-5 and 2% correction at the end of SOYCD 6-9. During Money, the acceleration is even more obvious where the first verse is 2% too fast and the last verse is 3% too fast. These speed fluctuations can be explained by batteries slowly losing power during the taping of the show. The present remaster corrects all of these speed issues.
Another aspect was the raw sound of the original transfer with some annoying saturation of particular frequencies during the loud parts and a kind of "narrow" spectrum due to prominent medium. Careful EQ was applied in order to reduce the annoying frequencies, and to let the music breathe more with a "fuller" sound. For instance, the depth of Roger's bass can be heard in its full glory on this remaster. Another example is the barking interlude in the middle of Dogs where the bass drum kicks now sound as they were likely to sound in the Pavillon that night.
Last but not least, the original recording was plagued with hundreds of mic bumps, probably caused by GD (the taper) moving during the show and touching his microphones. Every bump was carefully eliminated or attenuated manually in order to appreciate the music without these disturbances. This was the biggest challenge for this remaster, since it took dozens of hours to get rid of these mic bumps.
Other restoration work during this remastering process was to correct some tape drop-outs here and there, adjusting the levels of each channel and creating continuity (avoiding the cut due to tape flip) between Pigs On the Wing Pt.2 and Pigs, and between Welcome To The Machine and Have A Cigar. There was no NR applied for this remaster. |

from the same recording used for the RoIO Pavillon De Paris etc ... but the source here used is not as much excellent in sound ...
sound quality is very good, but it's actually a bit hissy ... speed sounds at times not correct, about all the RoIOs from this recording show this problem.

Review: Pavillion de Paris
There is a short fade-out and fade-in during SOYCD. This was on the original cassette recording where the song was split between side A and side B of the tape.

F_A comments: finally a complete version of this show. The information is very summar, no label, no gen info, so I don't know the origin of this release but it is supposed not to be from the "bootlegs" that are around. It sounds a little bit slow (I heard most of the sources are off speed), but it's not that annoying really, unless you have a musician ear. Dunno how this is compared to "filling in time" or "Paris 77", but this sounds quite enjoyable. A little bassy and hissy, but still VG-/VG. -Furry_Animal

Review: Pavillion de Paris*
only the Wish You Were Here set.
SQ: excellent
this unlabeled ‘Pavillon De Paris’ and the improved version of the RoIO ‘Shine On’ sound identical ... tracks length is about the same too.
there are actually at least other 3 RoIOs including this recording: Shine On (Black Cat BC 25), Live Volume 2 (JOK-013-B Joker Productions), Paris 1977 (091-014 The Screaming Abdabs) ... all ‘clones’ and all needing a speed-correction.
This ‘Pavillon De Paris’ (as SO Improved) is probably the result of a speed-correction attempt:

Speed Corrected by Spectre using Audacity 1.2.3 [2005-08-21]
Tracklist:
1. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (1-5) [13:24]
2. Welcome To The Machine [8:10]
3. Have A Cigar [5:23]
4. Wish You Were Here [6:21]
5. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (6-9) [18:42]
Total Time: 52:00
Partial recording of the 1977-02-25 Paris show. Only the last half of the show was
recorded. This release was way too fast, so I reduced the speed by 5.8%, aligned to
sector boundaries, removed some dead space between tracks, and repackaged. Not a bad
recording...a bit distant and overpowering in parts, but quite listenable. Enjoy! [Spectre]

Review: Shine On (Improved)*
This is my prefered live performance of the Wish You Were Here album,
from Paris, 25th Feb 1977.
I took the roio "Shine On" (Black Cat BC 25) and improved it a little bit:
I extracted all the tracks from the original CD with EAC
(quality for all tracks is 100%).
I then corrected the speed and equalized the record.
I deleted the Fade-out / Fade-in between track 4 and track 5.
I encoded all files to SHN
I scanned the original cover to include on the CD-R.
So it is 1 CD-R SHN with artwork.
The track list is :
1 Shine On You Crazy Diamond 1-5
2 Welcome To The Machine
3 Have A Cigar
4 Wish You Were Here
5 Shine On You Crazy Diamond 6-9
I hope you will enjoy
Patrick

I've left out the Bonus Track as I'm not sure which side of the line it falls on - better safe than sorry. It's a pretty warbly recording anyways, so you're not missing much.
Otherwise a nice sounding recording, imo. I've never heard any of the other recordings for this day, so I don't know how it stacks up to them. This one has always worked for me.
Enjoy!
