The concept is pretty obvious: to gather up as many rare early Dylan recordings as possible and compile them into one single set. It's a fantastic idea in theory, but in reality, there's is very little on here that anyone but the most diehard fan will find valuable. The John Bucklen Tape, which starts things off, is nothing but an old High School friend of John's talking about his friendship with Dylan. A few very short clips of a teenaged Dylan singing are great for novelty sake, but hardly can be considered moving music. The next several clips are both poor performances and rather lousy sound quality. Historically, they're great to have, but it's doubtful that it'll get much play time. Perhaps the worst sounding bootleg material to circulate on Silver CD is found on disc 2, the abominable Karen Wallace tape. If you can sit though the whole thing more than once, it would be rather surprising. These tapes were recorded while Dylan performed a party in May of 1960, and not only was he still far from an effective folksinger, the equipment used was probably of extremely poor quality. The tape also suffers from an unknown number of analog generations, probably made on equally lousy equipment. The two McKenzie tapes found on disc 3 is where we see the first sign of anything really valuable, though there's still only a few scattered takes that indicate the enormous talent the young man had brimming just below the surface. Finally, disc 4 is where the Dylan we all know and love comes through. The Steve Allen and Les Crane TV shows are two priceless bits of Dylan history, and should be heard by all Dylan fans. The other bits and pieces here are great to hear also, and serve to fill in a few holes that most collections have, as this is one of the only bootlegs to contain the material. Is this bootleg worth getting? Yes, it is. Will it become on of your favorite recordings?
