Notes: This is the first in what I hope will be a 20th anniversary series celebrating of one of R.E.M.'s less appreciated tours, the 1987 Work Tour. The aim of this series is to share some of the most enjoyable shows, and also the best recordings from the lowest generations. If you think you have decent a low gen tape from this tour in your closet that you want to share as part of this series, send me a PM and we’ll get it going. We are particularly keen to get quality complete recordings from 5 Nov 87 in Chicago, and from 25 to 28 Nov 87 in Atlanta. Anyway… the main reason for sharing this show is because it’s simply a great show. It is the lowest gen tape I’ve found, but that said there’s still plenty of hiss on it. And it does have its fair share of quality issues. I have a feeling that this tape was pieced together from two sources: source one makes up disc 1 tracks 1-4 (to halfway through Driver 8), and all of disc 2. Source 2, starts halfway into disc 1 track 4, Driver 8 and concludes with track 12, Wolves, Lower. I’ve traded for numerous versions of this show over the years and they have all had that same issue, some tapes even had the first 4 songs speeded up a lot. Source one is a little on the rough side, particularly during disc 1 tracks 1-4, source 2 sounds fantastic however. This show is very first show on the Work Tour, and appears slightly under rehearsed, which probably makes for a more interesting performance. I’m not sure if REM bothered to bring Buren Fowler over to add extra guitars on this, I suspect not, but Robyn Hitchcock joins the band for the encores from I Believe to end of the show. Next up, on or around September 18, a terrific set from Dusseldorf - the final show from the four-date European leg of the Work Tour.
