Excerpt taken from "THE VAULT", the 2004 reference book by Per Nilsen and the UPTOWN staff chronicling Prince's career in manic detail:
28 October 1988
Concert at the Civic Arena, Pittsburgh.
Some lines of "Irresistible Bitch" were added to "A Love Bizarre", while the piano medley included "What'd I Say",
"International Lover" and "It's No Secret (What God Can Do)"
From www.thedatabank.org:
Certainly one of the better Lovesexy audience recordings, and of superb quality for it's age.
Thankfully the quality of the recording is matched by the high quality of the performance, which makes this an unmissable release
for anyone with a passing interest in the US leg of the Lovesexy tour. The show is unique in a few respects with some very rare performances.
Prince recites the first verse and chorus of 'Irresistible Bitch' over the backing of 'A Love Bizarre' before the usual crowd chants
of 'Holly Rock'. The intro to 'Controversy' once again includes the computerised countdown used later on 'Live 4 Love'.
The real highlight comes during the phenomenal piano medley which at nearly 15 minutes long is one of the best of the tour.
It begins with some loose a cappella vocals which bear a similarity to 'Paisley Park' and includes a great version of 'What'd I Say?'.
The recording ends after '1999', and whether 'Alphabet St.' was performed or not is unclear. The downside to this recording is
that there are a number of incomplete parts. 'Blues In C' is missing the opening and fades out prematurely.
'Cross The Line' is also incomplete and fades out halfway through, before the recording starts during the ending of 'Lovesexy'
(thus it is missing all of 'Eye No' and the majority of 'Lovesexy'). That aside, I can only repeat what I said at the beginning
and say how great this is in terms of performance and quality. An audience filmed video recording is also circulating
on the DVD 'Pittsburgh 88', however this audio release is a different source recording. |
