Notes: A beautifully captured Tales From Topographic Oceans experience, and hands down the single best-sounding, most complete, Post-Remembering Tales tape yet to surface. There is a very small cut at the tail-end of The Ancient, and some minor tape damage during Ritual and Roundabout, but that's it. The same tape flip after The Ancient is present in the tape from the previous night so it was probably the logical place to turn the tape. Two different tapes of this show have turned up: One was used to press a vinyl bootleg of part of the concert and the other is this nearly complete excellent source tape. While both have circulated among yes collectors since the 1970s, this particular generation was an upgrade that circulated mainly among DAT collectors and traders. It really took branching out and meeting some Led Zeppelin traders to find it! The files included here are the complete M>HiFiVHS source with a few grafts from a recent M>DAT source. Also included are files giving the user an option to burn patched tracks instead of the damaged ones. The damage to Ritual occurs during the final drum crescendo and 15 seconds from the 03.18.74 tape were used to patch that. The damage to Roundabout occurs during a brief hammond organ solo and 8 seconds from the vinyl source was used there. (See the Extras folder for more about these patches) Finally, this tape was traded out by the taper in a slightly different version. Often he would take his master tape and run it through an EQ and make a few small edits-- sometimes adding a "thank you" from one place in the tape to another or grafting more applause into other places, thus marking the tape or, if you will, or making his own "remaster" to circulate in the analog trading days. Using this 2nd tape as a master when trading made all copies coming from him slightly altered from what the field equipment captured. This confirmed generation does NOT represent the EQ'd version traded out by the taper, but rather a raw version dubbed to HiFiVHS in the early 1980s. (Not that the master is really the master in this case, with all it's been through, but both sources used here in the HiFiVHS files are essentially clones of the same master Cassette.) .)(. A few changes were made when preparing this for "distribution." 1) The ambient music at the beginning was recorded, then the recorder was stopped, then started again in the middle of the Firebird Intro. Several seconds of silence were removed, as well as a few seconds with overloaded levels at the beginning of the Firebird, and the 2 were cross-faded together. 2) More Tape Pauses or Flips: There is a small pause just before the intro to AYAI which has been cross-faded together, and a Tape Flip in the burst of applause after AYAI. Two smoother ones after CTTE and after RSOG, and the tricky one at the end of The Ancient. After that the tape is paused during the encore applause and switched back on just before Jon's intro to the encore. All of this has been cross-faded together. Look in the extras folder for more about the tape flips. 3) The complete 03/19/74 source contained quite a bit of tape flutter from the HiFiVHS transfer, and Cool Edit 2000 was used to remove about 30 of these *farts* and clean it up. These were fraction-of-a-second blips caused by the alignment of the heads being slightly different on the deck used for playback. (and yes, all this was done back in the year 2000!) It is entirely possible that a few of these still remain. 4) Finally, this upgraded source was sent to about 10 long-time Yes Collectors, all with low-generation sources for this show (and 2 that had actually traded with the taper) for input. After it was declared a genuine upgrade, it began to change hands in earnest so it is more than likely that any Yes collector trading since 2000 has this source. It also spent quite a bit of time in the YesSHN and in other DC++ hubs. 5) The difference between that source and this one is only about 60 seconds total that have been grafted back in from a recent M > DAT source. Those spots are at the beginning of the tape, a few grafts between songs and the encore applause, thus representing everything that was taped that night. A careful 1:1 of both sources revealed a few bias differences-- most likely the NAK deck used for the recent transfer was not as perfectly aligned as the one used for the HiFiVHS transfer-- so while it was not actually an upgrade, it did supply more information and a few missing pieces. (See the Extras folder.) .)(. Lineage: AKG microphone(s) to a portable Cassette Deck > Master Cassette > HiFiVHS > DAT > CDR2 This Source: CDR2 > CDR > WAV (Cool Edit 2000) > CDR > AIFF (Felt Tip Sound Studio for grafts, edit & retrack) > FLAC > YOU Sector Boundaries Aligned. No EQ. This is what the field equipment recorded. .)(. In the world of tape-trading that GOT you this and all those other old Yes tapes, detailed source information is better than snazzy disc covers. I've included snazzy disc covers, too. Unfortunately I made the covers way back in 2000 and they reflect the old disc times, so this set won't be perfect, but then what set is? _________________ Alternate Option for Disc Two: In the Extras folder you will find patched files of the 2 damaged tracks. Using these files the user can burn a less-distracting disc 2. The patches are not perfect, nor are they supposed to be, but they are slightly less distracting than the missing music. If you are going to pass this on, PLEASE keep all of this information intact as to prevent misinformation traveling down the pike. It shouldn't be all that difficult. _________________ Disc Two (patched): 66:09 yes_1974.03.19_HiFiVHS_06 - The Ancient 20:10 yes_1974.03.19_HiFiVHS+patch_07 - Ritual (patched w/3.18.74 tape) 26:07 encores: yes_1974.03.19_HiFiVHS+patch_08 - Roundabout (patched w/alt. source) 8:35 yes_1974.03.19_HiFiVHS_09 - Starship Trooper 11:14 .)(. The labeling of the files should keep all this clear, but one would hope that having this text file explains the options clearly. Either burn the pure 3.19 tape A source or the one merged with a spot from tape B and patched with 3.18. _________________ _________________ Don't forget to Enjoy! .)(. As always, hoping to find more shows from this early dates of the tour, especially when the Remembering was still in the set, or the 03.04.1974 Cincinnati, Ohio concert, where the Remembering was rumored to made it back in for one final spectacular time. Anyone finding this document enjoyable that might be able to help find any uncirculated tapes of shows from the 1970s should not hesitate to do so and hopefully share those tapes in some kind of (albeit less-maniacal) similar fashion. Remember: if they don't get found soon they are probably deteriorating... Happy Hunting!
