Notes: The Black Crowes Charlotte Hornets Training Facility Fort Mill, SC USA April 19, 1995 A Doodee Music Master Recording Unknown Mics>Sony MZR30>BBE1002>BSR EQ3000>CDR>FLAC We're friends here. Let's just get this outta the way right up front -If you have any respect for great rock music whatsoever you need this show as it's a treasure. It carries the Uncle D guarantee - in triplicate. Who woulda thunk it - a practice gymnasium for an NBA team would be where I'd witness The Black Crowes taking their thing to an incredible new level. I'd been into the band since early 1990 and already seen many shows but this is the one where they left this mortal musical world in the dust and blasted off into the ethereal, luckily totin' Uncle D right along with them. Lots of highlights in this show but a few stand out for me. First, this is where "Cursed Diamond" became one of my favorite Crowes songs ever and, hands down, my favorite show opener. Raw emotion from Chris. As musical karma seems to miraculously work, I'd see them open with this song almost 10 years later to the day with the wife and kids in tow. Right on. Next, three words - Marc Fuckin' Ford. Holy cow did he crank it out. Consistently. Every song. Something all us Crowes lovers would come to expect over the years and something Marc would always deliver. The right feel, the right solo, the right soul - Marc always knew what to play and when to play it. His slide takes "Angels" to it's rightful place. And it was very evident how much more comfortable he'd become in the band and how much better he and Rich fed off each other. On "Urgency/Wiser" as well as "High Head" they really cook. Also, this was the first show I had the pleasure of attending where Chris gave into his Gram Parsons man-crush and performed one of his songs, something that consistently happens in Crowes shows to this day. Ah hell, let's face it, the whole damn show is a highlight. But if I gotta pick out "the" moment, it would have to be the 23 or so minutes of "Black Moon Jam>My Morning Song". The guitar work was inventive and Chris poured his heart out during the incredible coda. A friend of mine who attended the show with me told me he felt like he rose 25 feet off the ground during that song. Not braggin' or anything, but I think I got every bit of 30. Y'all enjoy.
