In our current, celebrity-fixated climate, where people become famous for their absence of clothing at film premieres or their participation in reality TV shows, it's refreshing to remember an age when genuine talent was what got you noticed. Jimi Hendrix's talent was undeniable: a genuine mastery of his instrument, coupled with an intuitive understanding of music, yet he remained a shy, complex character who doubted his own talent.
This fascinating documentary examines both sides of an icon; the man whose lifestyle embodied the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll ethos of the '60s and '70s, but who privately was an insecure perfectionist who would record his vocals in a screened-off booth, so unsure was he of his voice.
Jimi Hendrix rocketed to fame in the late 1960s with his brilliant and innovative electric guitar playing. Mostly self-taught on the instrument, the left-handed Hendrix used a right-handed guitar and played it upside down, building on the innovations of blues musicians such as B. B. King and Muddy Waters and employing new techniques such as feedback and distortion, winning the praise of audiences and his peers alike. Yet his downfall was just as rapid: following various legal wrangles and fallings-out with fellow musicians, Hendrix was dead at the age of just 27.
Of course, Hendrix's talent wasn't just what got him noticed; simulating sex with his guitar, playing it with his teeth and setting fire to it helped (stunts yet to be seen on the more mainstream reality TV shows, but give it time), but this in-depth biography gives a moving portrait of the greatest guitarist of the rock 'n' roll era.
