Zoom H2 @ 48KHz, 24 bit - Audacity (to break up wav files) - FLAC @ level 8
My first time going to El Paso - made decent time of about 5 hours, 20 minutes (from Lubbock, TX). Expecting to get there
around 8:45 or so, I realized that El Paso is in the Mountain Time Zone, so I was an hour early! I waited in the parking lot
for a half hour or so, hoping the line would die down, but no luck there. The line must've been 1/4 mile long, I kid you not.
Twisting & turning through the club's parking lot, it took about 20 minutes or so to get in the club. I could hear an opening
band playing while waiting in line, but what I heard didn't impress me (sorry if that band reads this!). Once inside, I made a
beeline for the merch table, hoping for some cool new goodies. I made one pass through the small club and saw only bathrooms
and a bar. Upon a second pass, I found something resembling a merch table - a little hole in the wall (literally) with about
4 different Deftones designs (modestly priced at about $30 to $35) and keychains. The one t-shirt design I liked wasn't
available in my size (2XL), so I left the merch table empty-handed and disappointed. Oh well...
I then walked around looking for a good spot to record. The club was packed and hot, but I found a "sweet spot" where the house
music sounded good, so I planted myself there and took out my recording equipment (I got video, too - look to see that posted soon).
About 10 minutes later, the band started and the place erupted!
The recording (both audio and video) suffer in some areas from being knocked around (at certain times, there were
multiple pits going on, one of which was right in front of me!), but I'm a big guy and a veteran of brutal shows, so I held on
to my gear, bounced around a bit and stayed on my feet. This is not my best recording (under the conditions) but definately not
my worst, so enjoy it for what it's worth. Deftones fans will note the great setlist - 7 of the 11 songs off the yet-to-be released
new CD, 5 songs from White Pony (the crowd was very excited during "Passenger"), 3 sons from Adrenaline as well as others
that are now classics in the Deftones setlist. Chino teased at playing "Back To School" but they never did... I also was
hoping for "Engine No. 9" and/or "Bored". Nevertheless, a dope show that I enjoyed (mostly) through my video camera lens.
New bass player Sergio rocked as expected - a shout out to brother Chi Cheng - we still miss you...
Any suggestions on a program that synchs audio and video? Enjoy traders - continue to support live music (and share it freely!). |
