SP-CMC-4U (low sens mod) mounted on cap-> H140 (rockboxed)-> WAV-> Adobe Audition (levels &... |

First off this was my second time seeing the Deftones live! It was a festival show (just like the first one at Nova Rock 2011), but this time they were definitely sticking out a lot on the line up. Here's the line up for you that day:
NOFX (Headliner) - old guy punk rock
Die Ärzte - shitty German punk rock (singing in German)
Deftones - defnitely not punk rock
New Found Glory - shitty pop punk rock
Marky Ramone - real punk rock
The Living End - never heard of this band probably punk rock (a look at their wiki article reveals they're a punk rock band)
Itchy Poopzkid - German punk rock (mainly singing in English)
We Are The Ocean - never heard of this band probably punk rock (a look at their wiki article reveals pop punk as one of their genres)
The Smoking Hearts - never heard of this band probably punk rock (first 30 seconds into their video for Destroy! big surprise, another punk rock band on the bill)
Ok, now that the obvious is obvious I'd like to say that the crowd was just there to hear the hits (with the exception of a few people right up front maybe).
Chino even went as far as lying down flat on his stomach on his ego riser and acting like he's asleep, that's how the crowd was (it almost looked like he was attempting to plank for a second- there's probably no photographic evidence of this because it happened after the third song was over and all the photographers got out of the photo pit, but if you happen to have a photo, speak up!)
Anyway other than that their overall sound level was a bit too low for my liking (the recording suffered a bit from that).
Also thought that Steven's guitar could've been a bit more prominent in the overall mix, instead when Chino grabbed a guitar during the set (which thankfully only happened maybe 2-3 times- I understand he's mainly the lead singer, but look at cats like Cornell for example- Chino's guitar was louder than Steven's guitar which was quite funny actually)
Granted that it could've been a bit louder and probably a lot boomier if I was near the stage (I was standing about 40m/131feet from the stage I guess) so I'm not entirely blaming their sound engineer for that.
I thought that some of the songs (mainly on the Koi No Yokan tracks) sounded a bit flat, not as heavy as on record (here's where a good producer & engineer comes in handy I guess).
Before and during the first few seconds of Passenger Chino adressed someone on side of the stage "You're still not there sir..." "Do you want a banana?..." etc (stage right- probably a tech- my guess would be his monitor tech) and not the crowd!
Another fun fact maybe: They had Engine No. 9 on the setlist but had to skip it because they ran out of time. They also skipped a song at Nova Rock in 2011 (my first Deftones show), because Chino suddenly disappeared from the stage after the fifth song (I guess he had to take a piss or something). The band then went into an impromptu jam btw!
Still I enjoyed the concert very much, but wasn't completely satisfied in the end.
Also fuck Skalar for booking Deftones on a punk festival!
P.S: Abe Cunningham is a beast on drums!
Enjoy! |
