Notes: Bob Dylan "10 Million in a Week" A compilation of very early recordings I didn't know what to classify this as -- it's not before a live audience, so I put "soundboard," but keep in mind that these songs were captured with home tape recorders. On Disc 1, the first and third segments would have to be called poor quality, but they're cool from a historical standpoint. You get to hear an adolescent Robert Zimmerman try his hand at '50s rock 'n' roll and expound on his views about the merits of different types of music. On Disc 1, the first and secord segments are partial songs. The stuff on Disc 2 sounds surprisingly good considering its age and the circumstances under which it was recorded, though it is not without a few recording glitches. It's an enjoyable listen if you're a Bob fan. I think all this stuff has appeared previously on other boots. This one claims to have the best-quality recordings available, but I don't know if that's true or not. This is the recent Hollow Horn commercial boot "Ten Million In A Week," not the venerable fan project of the same title and related contents. Like all the Hollow Horn releases, it's a collection of long-circulating material, in the best quality Hollow Horn can lift from fan-circulated recordings. Most or all of this material was previously collected on the relatively hard-to-find fan collection "Pre-Columbian Recordings", which was pirated a few years back as the commercial boot release "I Was So Much Younger Then." This set is reorganized, putting the material in mostly chronological order, and adding, if I remember right, some less rare material that wasn't on the original 5-CDR fan set. (This is just the beginning, there's later material on a second Hollow Horn set whose name I'll surely remember right after I post this -- something on the order of "Just Like Marlon Brando." Some of the credits need clarification or correction. The "Zimmerman Home Tape" is an excerpt from a longer recording, but the songs on it are complete as performed -- this is the teenage Bobby Zimmerman and his friend John Bucklen messing around, just doing a verse or two of the songs. It comes from the soundtrack of a BBC TV documentary. Track 4 is often incorrectly listed as "Blue Moon," due to a misinterpretation of a comment on the TV program. The second section is usually identified as the Karen Wallace Excerpts or Samples Tape; there are other, more extensive versions of this recording around, but none are complete. The third section is actually the Cleve Petterson tape; one song from it is on Bootleg Series 7 (NDH); and the intrepid and dedicated fan can listen to the complete tape, in superior quality, by visiting the Minnesota Historical Society. This set apparently presents the high-gen, incomplete version that's been circulating for many years. The final track on disc 1, "Ranger's Command," is not from the Gooding Apartment Tape, but from Dylan's September 29, 1961 performance at Gerdes Folk City. Cynthia Gooding had a more extensive set of recordings from that historic run and other 1961-62 events, but only two other tracks from this partial recording, and "Folksinger's Choice" have also surfaced since her death. The rest are feared lost, a tragedy for collectors and music historians, since Gooding is said to have had an astonishing collection of field recordings documenting the Greenwich Village folk revival.
