Quarter To Three Original notes: The story of Bruce’s early days has been documented many times, most recently in the current New Yorker magazine. As described therein, Bruce’s five night, ten show stint at The Bottom Line was crucial to launching his third album, 'Born to Run'. Many executives at Columbia Records were frustrated with Bruce’s lack of commercial success and Born to Run was likely his last chance with the label. Columbia reportedly bought a quarter of the 500 seats for each show to distribute among music industry people to help spread the word. Even so, tickets did not sell out immediately and a week after going on sale they were available for any of the shows. That all ended when the public heard WNEW’s broadcast of show number 5. The next two nights, fans were lined up around the corner with the hope of getting a standing room spot at the bar to hear the new phenom. This is the first recording of one of the late shows to surface. It is the first night and this tape captures all of the ambiance of this intimate club. You can hear each breath and whisper from Bruce while dishes and glasses are shuffled on the tables. Bruce seems to just appear behind the piano and gets a single reaction from the crowd as he opens solo with 'For You.' It is evident how he captures the crowd more and more with each song. By the time he hits the 20 minute versions of 'Kitty’s Back' and 'New York City Serenade', he has them in his hands. Thanks to Mr. Anonymous who met the taper, ODoc55, thru Dimeadozen. Goody's notes: The speed of the source was quite slow, causing the pitch to be approximately 30 cents flat. That has now been fixed. The mono tape transfer caused the right channel to be favored, so phase correction and level balancing centered the sound and automatically focused it as an added benefit, resulting in a soundstage and instrument presentation that is more defined, with much sharper detail. The tape was stopped after each song to conserve tape, so very short fades have been added in order to make the listening experience less jarring at most of the transitions, (to the best of my ability.) Some of these attempts had better results than others... Hopefully, you'll find it all good, regardless. Extreme thanks go to bsfanatic for providing the first edition of this incredible archive to the world, after cleaning up the source tape. "Some of the files needed to be split, as several songs were on 1 track. Also, there was tape garble in many spots that I removed as long as it didn't interfere with the music, not to mention space gaps here and there on several tracks." Of course, where would this be without taper ODoc55, who gave me his blessing to remaster the set after it was generously shared by bsfanatic at Dime, where I and many others excitedly found it. Also, let's give a big hand to ethiessen for his tasteful and classy art package, which accompanies this set. We spent a lot of time getting it just right for this edition, as we had a really nice package to live up to in the original, and had to at least meet the quality standards of that one. Included is the scan of the original J-Card in ODoc55's tape box (apparently TDK, so you know it was decent stock,) which we borrowed from a bit of the original art that bsfanatic provided with his original package. And please direct your attention to the upcoming schedule at The Bottom Line, right after Bruce's historic run, also included in one of the inserts. Why, it's none other than future bandmate Nils Lofgren! You can't make this shit up... Some of it was obviously meant to be. Sure glad this turned up, after all these years. Thanks so much, guys
