JFE Remaster source (CC165) |
Notes: |
A remaster of "The Rainbow Volumes Three" and "End Of The Rainbow" roio's (not a new analogue to digital transfer) to make a more complete, distraction free show with speed correction, level correction and tape issue fixes.
ORIGINAL SOURCE NOTES:
from original source 1 "The Rainbow Volumes Three"
notes:
"Cassette 3rd generation>Cdr(3)>SHN
It is from the the Atomic Cow Recording label."
from original source 2 "End Of The Rainbow"
notes:
"These recordings were made by myself at the Rainbow Theatre, London on 19 February 1972, using a Dixons 'Prinzsound' portable tape recorder with a half-decent mic. (smuggled in under my smelly Afghan coat!) Transferred from C90 audio cassettes on a JVC KD10 Cassette player to .wav files using 'AAA Real Recorder' and converted to .flac files."
REMASTER NOTES:
This is a really good show. Give this recording a chance. The sound keeps getting better throughout the show. Source 1 gets better as the levels were increased on the master. Source 2 just sounds better and improves as the levels were lowered on the master (to stop the distortion). It's a good enough recording that you can hear the dynamics and all the instruments.
Speed corrected: S1 ran slow and the 1st half of S2 ran a little fast (with a little piece running really fast). I believe Echoes is complete between both tapes. ASOS was repaired by recycling parts to fill in the gaps (better than abrupt jumps or pieces of different shows IMO). S1 had low and really low levels and few abrupt changes. S2 was better, just a few fluctuations. All level corrections were positive (no bits lost from turning anything down). STM and opening of Breathe are still missing.

All Sources: ACL2005>CDR>EAC>FLAC
Source1: The Rainbow Volumes 3 (ACR-019) SHN DL
Source2: End Of The Rainbow (Moonwalk Part2) FLAC DL
Info file says, "The main purpose of this project was to combine the two incomplete sources for this important concert date to create one complete show. Source 1 was speed corrected, channels balanced, and overall level increased. Very slight de-hiss at the very top combined with slight EQ changes at high end in attempt to bring some music out with no net change in hiss level. No changes for Source 2 except inserting additional audience segment from Source 1 at the end of Echoes and removed one bump and a harsh tape start." |

Converts to 2 audio discs: The Dark Side Of The Moon - One Of These Days - Careful With That Axe, Eugene - Echoes - A Saucerful Of Secrets (cuts)
Lineage: 2nd gen TDK SA90 tapes > *Technics RS-B965-M > Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 > Reaper v4.61 and iZotope RX3 > FLAC (16bit/44.1kHz) - xACT used to create FFP
These tapes came from Rolf Ossenberg in a trade completed in September 1993. They were recorded with Dolby B and played back with it off. I made some adjustments in the analogue domain to bring the channels into better balance.
A - R channel was a lot stronger (track 1)
B - L bit stronger, turned down L and R to prevent clipping (tracks 2-3)
C - L bit stronger, left levels as per B (tracks 4-5)
Before embarking on the speed correction, I used iZotope RX3’s Azimuth functions to repair the stereo imbalance and phase issues that had occurred with improper tape head alignment and other speed related issues in the lineage.
Side A: adaptive level matching right -3.3dB, adaptive azimuth adjustment delay right +22.4 samples
Side B: R +1.1dB, R +2.6 samples
Side C: R +1.2dB, R +3.6 samples
Speed corrections were applied to the three sides. My thanks, as ever, to goldenband for his trusty advice.
Side A: +2.34%
Side B: +3.83%
Side C: +3.23%
ASOS starts to slip around a bit, but not enough to worry about. Stratcat58 cassettes / Neonknight tape transfer, November 2015 |
