Notes: U2 Aloha Stadium December 9, 2006 “Flying Into Hawaii” The ultimate version Blend of sources: Chrisedge Bakerstuff Bono IEM Gear: Protools/ Audition Mixing: Bob S. First off this work is dedicated to the tapers and their generosity in making this happen. The mission for this was to make a recording that sounds like you are in the middle of the sweet spot of the stadium. Processes as follows: Bakerstuff was used as the primary source as it had very direct sound. Unfortunately it suffered from 2 people that were constantly screaming. A full master was done within protocols using primarily a 7 band parametric and light multband to add definition to the vocals and bass, and finally a subsonic filter to get the low stuff that was just adding mud to the sound. From that, the track was duplicated and applied a high pass filter at 600hz for use as a bottom end filler for Chris’ version. Chris’ version was used for ambience, as the taping position was further back. First step is to run in a harmonic balancer and match the sound of Bakers’ version from 600hz through 3k for the filler track during Bakers screamers. Duplicating the track, and narrowing the stereo image to 80% took some of the distance sound out of it to use as the ambience track. The IEM obviously is used for vocals. The first step with it was to filter the click track, but because of the style of click it could not be completely removed. Then using eq and aural exciter to fill it out a give it a more natural sound. The big problem with this source was the receiver used to pull it in would loose the frequency every now and again causing static, so this could not be used at all times. The last third of the show the wind came up and affected both audience sources at times. I filtered it as best as possible, but since it was so wide across the low and mid frequencies total removal resulted in a very thin sound, so in these areas I used a high pass to at least get the big rumble reduced. On to the mixing. Bakers source was set to –6db, Chris’ to –12db and the IEM to –4db as base settings. I crossed the two duplicate tracks as fills for each of the main tracks to remove the screamers. This process took 6 months of on and off work, and unfortunately was not fully completed, as the engineering staff at work decided to upgrade the software and it somehow corrupted the file. Due to the complexity of the mix it was impossible to rebuild it and keep going (there are well over 1000 automations).Fortunately I had done a mixdown just to see how things were going. All that was left was the little tweaks, so it’s not that devastating. The final mastering was done on Audition2 using a five band parametric for pre, muliband compressor to really level things out. I set the multiband very mildly to mainly use it as a soft limiter to keep the sound from getting out of hand. The final phase was a 1/3 octave for final smoothing. Cheering between encores is pulled up. Artwork is included, but if anyone has something better to offer go for it! Mike this one’s for you! Thanks for everything. Hope you all enjoy. Please share! And as usual please don’t sell this. All I Want Is You Well, for my 10th and final U2 Vertigo show, I was a bit further back than I wanted to be for taping. Could have done a GA pull, but did not want to battle the stadium sized GA floor. It's a bit distant, and not my best, but here you go. It has a little wind issues, and I hard limited the clapping, but show 131 was a great one. From San Diego to Hawaii - Chrisedge I did not put fades at the mid point in show. Screamers Suck. ============ #45984 by Wanderer at 2006-12-14 20:10:27 GMT My Rating: Hi chrisedge: I was listening to your recording and I noted an small "jump" at the 5:59 of I Still Haven't Found (track 6). I just wanted to know if it is my file or the original file has it. Thak you again for your great job! ============= #45994 by Stutter at 2006-12-14 21:04:44 GMT My Rating: In comment #45984 Wanderer wrote something like this: Hi chrisedge: I was listening to your recording and I noted an small "jump" at the 5:59 of I Still Haven't Found (track 6). I just wanted to know if it is my file or the original file has it. Thak you again for your great job! I can confirm this. Unfortunately there are some points of the recording where this happens (some are huge) such as "one" (4:22) and a huge one i forgot where. This should be a transfer error and a new one would solve this. I doubt it's a DAT issue. Thanks for sharing the beggining and end of the tour Chris. It feels like it came full circle. ============== #46014 by Chrisedge at 2006-12-15 01:04:22 GMT My Rating: Well, I can retransfer the DAT. I doubt it's in the original recording. I have no problem doing that, but it will mean a whole another version. Thoughts? (I knew I shoulda listened to it first :) ) EDITED TO ADD: I have already started a 2nd transfer. I will spin it for myself over the weekend and repost. Download this verison only if your desperate to hear it. I am super sorry for the errors. I promise to make it up in a special way. :) ===============
Mark Jochim (Thailand) (5/0) FLAC / 2 View   [MATRIX of Chrisedge and Bakerstuff recordings:] flac files from U2T > Import to audition2>...
Notes: This is a matrix of Chrisedge and bakerstuff Gear: audtion2 done at 48k 32 bit These appeared to be the best versions out there. First I took Bakerstuff and did a full mastering of the set, using a 6 band parametric to even it out. Then ran a multiband compressor to get the levels up. Chris’ was a bit more challenging due to the distance. First I did a pre master to see what I could get out of it, which was quite a bit. This required bringing down the spike at 1200hz that was giving it most of the distance sound, and then I narrowed the soundstage to give it even more clarity. This pass was used as the patch for Bakers’ version, which was good but had 2 people constantly screaming throughout the show. I then did another pass on Chris’ with a bass roll off that would be used as the ambiance for the show. The mix was kind of done like a soundboard / audience matrix where Bakers version was up full and Chris’ was mixed back to give the space to the recording. The end result is very clear vocals with a lot of punch, but with the ambience to give you the feel of a stadium show without being too echoey. Lineage: flac files from U2T Import to audition2> upsample to 48k 32 bit> process and sync> mix>render>downsample to 44.1k>cdwave tracking>TLH flac encode level 6 Artwork included *NOTE* I took a comical approach to the coverart.
