I am not a taper but someone sent me this comment which I'm including here. "FYI, these are not soundboards, they are audience recordings. The reason you may have thought they were boards is because an "outdoor" show has virtually no reflected sound and if the mics are pointed straight forward they will pick up essentially direct sound. Also, you can hear phase problem in the high end due to the slight wind blowing the sound waves around. The timbres are inaccurate (listen to the vocals) making it sound more like a recording of the P.A. and the crowd is very audible. I would say the stand was up 12 feet in the taper's section. In general, though, the recordings are good, however, I think the recordist would have been able to get a better 3 dimensional effect by using a different recording configuration. It sounds as though he/she just pointed the mics straight forward, where I would have used a ORTF or DIN pattern." Does anyone know if this lineage was conjectured based on the sound quality? |

08/22/2002 | e. | Recently, there was some discussion about the SBD provenance of this show in the a.b.gd.d group. Skank indicated that his source for this show was not a taper but someone connected with, I believe, the Vibes production crew. While the source may be a matrix (which would explain the sound anomolies refered to above), there isn't (yet) any solid reason to believe that the SBD lineage is wholly inaccurate. Whatever the true source, it is a fine recording and worth having regardless.
08/22/2002 | AO | I am not a taper, but I have listened to plenty of tapes over the years and I would put money on this being a Matrix source. Pretty damn crisp recording with Phil very large and defined in the mix. I hear too many individual crowd voices for for the source to be a 12'high mic stand in the tapers section (assuming that such a set up would sound as good as this source).
08/23/2002 | hanno | I'll bet larger sums on this being "just" an excellent FOB tape. no board, no matrix. but an excellent FOB.

this recording is identical to the audio component of the mpeg recording i have of the video screen projection from this show. this is not an audience video screen recording either, but off of the video feed itself ;) i'm pretty sure there's a sbd component to the mix despite the naysaying... same thing for the following night's purported board which i have the mpeg vid's for as well. and no the mpegs are not for trade... |
