I am not a taper but someone sent me this comment which I'm including here. "FYI, these are not soundboards, they are audience recordings. The reason you may have thought they were boards is because an "outdoor" show has virtually no reflected sound and if the mics are pointed straight forward they will pick up essentially direct sound. Also, you can hear phase problem in the high end due to the slight wind blowing the sound waves around. The timbres are inaccurate (listen to the vocals) making it sound more like a recording of the P.A. and the crowd is very audible. I would say the stand was up 12 feet in the taper's section. In general, though, the recordings are good, however, I think the recordist would have been able to get a better 3 dimensional effect by using a different recording configuration. It sounds as though he/she just pointed the mics straight forward, where I would have used a ORTF or DIN pattern." Does anyone know if this lineage was conjectered based on the sound quality? |
