Regardless of how this is labeled, this is not a SBD reel to DAT direct transfer. The seeder admitted at shnflac that the lineage is UNKNOWN. In the bt.etree torrent, he said it might be sbd > cass> DAT but noone knows. So lineage is wrong. And it's certainly not clear whether this is any sort of upgrade to the Hollister source. |

Head on over to the bt.etree link if you want to read a spat about whether this is an upgrade. A user named badbob says "THIS IS A MAJOR UPGRADE IN SOUND QUALITY" that sounds "infinitely better" than 12758. Well, here's my $0.02. I pulled up the IA vbr mp3's of Jack Straw from 12758 (hereafter OLD) and 89641 (hereafter NEW) into Audacity. I sped OLD 0.85% so the speeds would match. (I don't know which source is really the correct speed, if either.) I amplified OLD 1.5db so the volumes were more equal. And then I played them through my mid-range stereo as I switched back and forth. OLD and NEW sound significantly different, and I like OLD better. OLD has more "air" at the top and sounds a little more natural to me, and NEW sounds a bit harsh by comparison. And from an objective standpoint, I'd note that if you listen to the verse that starts at around 0:50 and focus on the high end, there's a really nice, airy delicate cymbal playing in OLD that's all but wiped from NEW. |
