Notes: |
This is the legendary 11/20/73 Neil show with the Santa Monica Flyers (missing 4 songs), bookended with lots of extra material, put together by Greg McGarvey, and cleaned up by Mr. Clean.
The audio version fits on 3 discs, and the SHN version is on 2 discs.
All three discs of the audio version are over 74-minutes long.

Here are Greg's notes:
This is a little collection I made for myself, based on the idea of squeezing the highlights of the eight Tonight's The Night shows I had in my collection down to two or three discs. After running over those sixteen CDs several times with my car, I glued the shards back together and, voil?! In addition to an endless version of "Tonight's The Night" (thirty-six minutes in length, including one point where the taper spends an unknown length of time changing or flipping his tape), the Chicago show has great versions of all the other songs which were played. Therefore, I decided to hang onto this show and add dialogue and versions of songs which were either not played at the show, or not available on the recording of the show that I had (Chicago Delirium).
Disc one actually STARTS with a batch of bonus tracks (dialogue, and three songs which were played near the beginning of their respective sets, earlier that month). By placing them in this sequence, I was able to fill up disc one well, without breaking up the flow of the Chicago show (which, keep in mind, includes a thirty-six minute track).
While this collection DOES include at least one version of every song known to have been played on the tour, according to the Sugar Mountain database (aside from "Tell Me Why," of which there is no recording known to be circulating), I don't consider this a *Tour Compilation*, as there are a handful of shows which I haven't heard, which likely include entertaining dialogue and perhaps superior versions of songs.
Therefore, I consider this an "open source" compilation, and invite anyone to expand it or use it as a basis for a real, live, Tour Compilation.
A friend of mine has obtained a CD transfer of a complete, better-sounding tape of the show (perhaps a lower generation version of the one included here), but his copy came out poorly and is unlistenable. His source has not responded to his request for a clean copy. So, be aware that a better recording of the Chicago portion of this compilation could surface.
Shakey readers will note that most of the Tonight's The Night tour performances and hijinx described in Mr. McDonough's book are featured on this collection.
The last version of "Tonight's The Night" (from the Bristol show) may have been dubbed via an open air microphone, which might explain the noise somewhere around the 11:00 point (armpit fart?!?) and the loud, drunken singing during the beginning of the performance. My theory is that these particular drunken Brits were recorded while they, or their friend, was dubbing the tape. As startling as they are, I decided to include this version of the song because of the intensity of the performance (Neil's and the band's, that is) (described in depth in Shakey) - and because drunken Brits aren't necessarily out-of-place on a Tonight's The Night tour recording.
All selections recorded in Miami Beach except where indicated.

Regarding this show, a Dime user posted this a few months ago:
"I was there and it was a very strange night.
Neil arrived very late for the show and didn't come on until almost 1.5 hours after the scheduled start time. He came in wearing an Andy Frain (the usher company contracted by Chicago theaters) coat and apologized for his tardiness. He proceded to put on a very rambling show with a lot of audience chatter. A memorable night (well most if it is memorable)."
Here are Mr. Clean's notes on non-digital glitches in the collection:
Disc 1
02 Dialogue (11/4/73) - has some odd light noises, sounds like tape recorder noise
06 Albuquerque [includes ?Roll Out The Barrel?]
(11/3/73) - there?s a non-digital thump around 3:40
09 Don't Be Denied (11/20/73) - has recorder problems (cuts in & out) until about 0:57
17 Flying On The Ground Is Wrong (11/20/73) (cut)
20 The Losing End (11/20/73) (partial-ending only)
Disc 2
01 Tonight's The Night (11/20/73) - This track is now 34:52; there was about 29 seconds of very bad tape or excessive noise from someone handling tape recorder between 21:45-22:14, which was followed by a splice with what sounds like a different & poorer quality tape source around 22:14. The bad portion was cut out and re-spliced around the 21:45 mark during a pretty intense guitar solo. It?s not perfect, but it is better than it was. It?s probably more noticeable because of the different tape quality than the actual blending of the splice.
Disc 3
02 Tonight's The Night (11/4/73) (cut) - there is noise for a second or two at the end, from the recorder being shut off.
10 Cowgirl In The Sand (11/5/73) - sounds like a different source (possibly vinyl) has been splice in between 7:38-11:37 (there is light surface noise/static noticeable during this portion).
11 Tonight's The Night (11/4/73) - this is not a very good sound quality recording; it?s pretty distant sounding and has a lot of hiss & audience noise; there is especially a lot of noise from someone messing with the recorder between 12:30-13:05; there is also noise the last couple of seconds at the end from the recorder being shut off.
Special thanks to Greg for putting together this excellent collection, and Mr. Clean for cleaning this up as much as possible.
