This is I think because the frame size broadcast by BBCi is not one of the DVD standard ones. It plays fine in my standalone DVD player (a Sony) and should do in most others. However, note that a few people have reported various problems playing these BBCi DVDs (4 people in Phillips players), presumeably due to the non-DVD compliant resolution, so I strongly recommend burning to a DVD(-RW/+RW) to test it out. First time I've mixed two different frame sizes on one DVD (did it by adding them as separate titles) so I hope this is successful - plays fine for me. There was no re-encoding of the source video. Buckrogers mentioned that Cheated Hearts was broadcast but I couldn't find that on my recordings as I think it must have been on BBC2, which I didn't record.
