So I think this was my 8th time seeing the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? Something like that. I'm almost at double digits with them. As always, they put on a pretty tight and good sounding (albeit, a bit short - only an hour for a headliner? Sigh...) set. I had just seen them last October at the Hollywood Bowl, and it was pretty much the same show, though a bit more condensed, though they did play "Art Star", which hasn't been in rotation since 2018 according to Setlist.fm (even Karen O said, afterwards, "that was a fucking deep cut").
I did not get a very good spot for this set. The set times/schedule had me all over the place, and given I had zero interest in seeing MGMT (who played right before the YYY's), I went and saw (and recorded of course) M83 at the other stage, meaning I had to hike back to the main stage to catch YYY's, who were scheduled to start right when M83 ended, meaning there was no way I was going to get a close spot for their set, unless I wanted to spend half my time squeezing and fighting my way through the crowd, and I also had zero interest in that too. Plus, I figured staying in the back gave me a quicker path out of the festival and to the Uber/ride-share lot. But since I knew I was going to see the set from the back, I did try to find my way towards one of the speaker stacks at least, to get the best sound I could, and I must say, I thought the sound was on point for this stage/set. I was rather impressed, even as far back as I was (which had to be close to 100 yards or so?). I was behind speaker pole 8 if that means anything (for those that were there).
The crowd wasn't super talkative where I was at, which was surprising, but that doesn't mean I was free from idiots chatting and screaming every so often, so you may hear some things here and there. What else can you expect from a drunk crowd in the back? Festival life am I right?
They played all their standard stuff. As I said, this was a condensed headlining set of just an hour in length, so there weren't high expectations going in honestly. Before "Maps", Karen O had the entire crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to her husband Barney. I do wish they could have played longer as they sounded great, but oh well. You'll hear one woman start screaming "one more song!" at the very end. But that wasn't happening...
