Please Do Not Convert To Lossy Formats Please Do Not Sell Please Share With Others My Personal Notes About This Release: This is another project my friends and I have put together for everyone, I personally have been wanting to do a remaster of this show for a long time. The Ireland shows are a little nostalgic for me because I'm Irish, family comes from Dublin, and it's my favourite tour out of all of the years Zeppelin were performing. Besides all of that, this an excellent ( and historic) show that deserves more respect and attention then what it gets, and I hope that we've done to the recording helps create a new appreciation for this recording. Out of the two Ireland tapes, I personally feel that this is the strongest recording of the two ( in both performance and sound quality). The Belfast tape isn't horrible or something to avoid ( it'll grow on you after a few listens), but it's a little distant ( even though it sounds like it was taped from the floor), and it suffers from a bit of distortion. As for the band, they seem a little nervous playing for the crowds after a lengthy hiatus, and what was then the " new album" material. The Dublin show has it's share of problems as well. The taper fiddles with their equipment, taping the mic, moving it around, and stopping and starting the tape several times. Most likely the taper stopped recording to conserve tape, but really by doing it so many times, they've actually cut quite a lot of important audio material, ( a portion of the bands second ever performances of " Black Dog", " Going To California", and " Rock And Roll", not to mention the possible full acoustic set, and the rare performance of " C'mon Everybody". Also, the taper ( or possibly a friend of the taper, or even just a member of the audience) is a little too over zealous during the bands performance, and their cheers, whistling, and even immitating guitar solos can really be quite grating on the listener, and does take the focus away from the actual music a bit. I'm sure the taper did the best with what they had available, and their actions ( the fiddling with the equipment, moving it around, etc,) was probably done to try to capture the best possible sound, and the majority of this important performance, so I thank them for their efforts. My mate Kevin ( who I've dedicated the show to) made a comment that a late relative of his said that a reel to reel source tape of this performance is known to exist, hopefully the rumours are true, and it will surface one day. So even though the recording suffers from these issues, it is indeed a brighter sounding recording then the Belfast tape, which is odd because this was taped from a balcony and usually a recording taped closer to the stage would sound superior then being taped from a balcony. The band have seemed to have settled in and found their groove, playing longer versions of " Dazed And Confused", and " Whole Lotta Love" for the crowd, and they seem to be enjoying themselves, feeding off the energy of the audience. As for the bootleg releases of this show, the first releases of the show ( " Crazed Attack", and EVSD's " Black Velvet") were quite rough around the edges, they didn't remove the hiss, or try and fix some of the tape flucuations. The music and volume were also brought up to the front, kind of attacking the listeners ears a bit. The EVSD " Black Velvet" release isn't really the actual tape because they've patched up the holes in the recording with Ipswich ( 11-16-71), shame that a quality label like EVSD would do such a thing. Tarantura's release " I Can't Believe It!" ( part of Tarantura's boxset " 911117: Triumph For Mother" which includes the Belfast show) is the best bootleg release of this show. It uses a 2nd gen tape for their release ( none of the other bootleg releases have any information about the generation of the tapes they've used), they use the real tape ( no patches to complete tracks), they've done a decent job EQ'ing the recording, and they've removed a fair bit of hiss, and tape flucuations, which is why I chose to use it as the main tape source for this project. However, Tarantura's release is incomplete because they have cut over a minute of tape from the original recording. Here's how it breaks down: - 25 seconds was cut from the introduction - 39 seconds was cut after " Moby Dick" - 59 seconds was cut after " Rock And Roll" A grand total of 1:23 of tape cut from the original recording. What's been cut isn't imparative to the recording, it's all audience chatter/cheering, no music has been cut from that release, but I personally believe that every bit of a recording is imparative to have. Seems very odd that Tarantura goes all out remastering the recording, but doesn't offer collectors a complete tape. It's not due to a factor of disc time, with the added on material, you can still fit everything on to two discs. So that's why I've merged it with Sean's source, to mostly fill in the gaps missing from Tarantura's recording. Even though Sean's tape is the complete recording, we decided to mostly use it as a patching source because it's a generation below what Tarantura has used ( Sean's is a combination of 3rd Gen tape, and an unknown generation cassette), and it suffers from a tremendous amount of flucuations, tape hiss, and digi noise, particularly on the first disc. However, the material that makes up the second disc of the show ( " Whole Lotta Love", " Communication Breakdown", " C'mon Everybody", and " Rock And Roll") sounded in someways superior to the Tarantura release. It had a little more " punch to it, and it's volume wasn't excessively raised the way the Tarantura did on their release. It might be a good transfer of the tape, or the levels of volume applied to the tracks, Sean didn't have that much information about his sources besides the generation of the cassettes. Whatever it was that was applied to Seans tape source, we enjoyed the sound of Sean's second disc worth of audio material as much as our remaster of the second disc of the Tarantura tape, and we had a hard time deciding whether or not we should use Sean's tape to make up the second disc of material. We eventually settled on the remaster of the Tarantura tape, using Sean's version of " Rock And Roll" to finish it off, but we thought it would be a good idea to offer everyone here a choice about which remaster they preferred, so we've included our remaster of Sean's tape source as bonus material. The choice is up to everyone here whether or not they'd like to use it. Besides EQ'ing, we also had to apply tape speed correction to the last three tracks. So, after saying all that, this is what we've done to create this version, and try and make this version different from the others: The main goal of this project was to balance out the instruments/vocals, and create some ambiance of the venue. As I stated, this recording was taped from a balcony, the tapers claim that one of their friends is " down there", meaning that they were seated in a balcony, not on the floor. You can also hear the echo in Plant's vocals ( especially during " Whole Lotta Love" when they use the effects on his voice when he breaks into " Boogie Chillen"). So we've tried to balance out the instruments and tried to create the feeling sitting in the area the tapers were positioned, and a sense of the venue the best we could. What makes this show so special and important is that this show features the bands second live performances of material from Led Zeppelin IV for an audience. The band play staples of their setlist like " Black Dog", and " Stairway To Heaven" with real passion and intensity. The band are in fine form for this show, and sound as if they're in better spirits then they were the previous night. According to a review of posted by Keith Lambert on Underground Uprising for the EVSD release of the Belfast tape, Bonham was apparently in a bad mood during the show. From the review: "One audience member remembers seeing the rest of the band drinking beer at the side of stage during this number, heckling Bonham mercilessly. He beckoned to them, hoping that they would return to finish the song. Bonzo breaks his sticks during Moby Dick, perhaps he was venting some frustration at his colleagues!" The band also seem to be in a creative mood, the addition of " C'mon Everybody" shows that they wanted to add and play something special for the crowd ( who have been incredibly responsive to the band). It's possible that they could've added to the setlist " Gallows Pole", an audience member keeps yelling out a request for the song, and Plant responds " yeah eventually". He could've just said that to appease the audience patron, but since the recording is so incomplete, who knows what could've happened that night. Some highlights of the show are: " Black Dog" ( Plant really tries to recreate the studio version) " Stairway To Heaven" ( he messes up the lyrics slightly, but it's one of the earliest attempts of the song, so it's understandable) " Whole Lotta Love" " Communication Breakdown" It's a shame that they never came back to play Ireland, I often wonder if it was due to Bonham's experiences there ( aside from being heckled by his bandmates, he also apparently got into a fight with Richard Cole and a hotel chef in Dublin), or if they just couldn't find the time. The title comes from a song by the Boston/Irish punk band The Dropkick Murphy's. My friends and I were mulling over suitable title names for this show, and my friend told me that the band have a song called ( or has the lyric) " Turning Guinness Into Gold", and we all thought it was a suitable title, and had a connection to the country where the concert took place. Stay tuned for artwork from the very talented JamieL for this release. My deepest thanks go out to him for taking time out to do these for myself, and everyone in the community. In the meantime, please visit his site, and give him his proper thanks as well. Slainte!
