11/14/2003 | C Miller | This show is with Clarence Clemens. I think he played on most, if not all, of the dates on this excellent tour. As for this recording, it's pretty nice, but there is overload distortion in several places. (haven't made a list - sorry) | |

Yes, a fantastic tour (8.26.1989 through 9.16.1989; check out 8.26, 9.1, 9.2, and 9.10, 9.11, 9.15, and 9.16.1989 for truly exceptional performances). Jerry was really on fire. Weir, who opened each show with Rob Wasserman, must have been drooling with the way Jerry was playing. Indeed, the Band would bring back Dark Star and Help Slip just about a month later. The first 6 shows of the Fall 1989 JGB Tour (8.26, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.5, and 9.6.1989) did not include Clarence Clemons. The final seven shows (9.7, 9.9, 9.10, 9.11, 9.13, 9.15, and 9.16.1989) included Clarence Clemons. His standout show, in my opinion of course, was 9.09.1989 (see, e.g., the Don't Let Go on 9.09.1989, which was a pretty flat show except for the Don't Let Go where Clarence really broke free from his rhythmic playing and started to improvise freely with Jerry). |
