Notes: | Transferred, tracked and mastered by Bill Guarneri JazzFanatic, April 19, 2014 This was sourced from shn ID 177. "Hot" distorted vocals marred this otherwise nice performance. Vocals were attenuated resulting in better balance and less vocal distortion. Still not perfect but much better.

Notes: | gdADT [2007-01-29] The sound is quite good for an aud of this era, perhaps attributable to the venue. The playing is good but not stellar for 73 despite the Dar Star > EOTW in set 2, the transition which is characterized by deep Lesh rumbles. The EOTW is noted for its length and jazzy playing. Overall enjoyable for the 73 song mix just not exceptional enough to make the must hear 73 list.

Notes: | sbd patched [2007-01-29] See my review of the other sources for this performance ranking. The sbd is good for mix and sound and Phil's bass rumbles on the Star > EOTW transition come through.

Akai GX636 > Apogee Mini Me(24/96)/Apogee Mini DAC(monitoring/mastering) > Lynx One soundcard > Wavelab 5.0 > DVD > Soundforge 8.0 (track IDs and cross fades) > downsampled to 16/44 in r8brain (with dithering) > FLAC(level 8) [2009-08-08]This version came right on the heels of Noah's prior submission - the bass is still somewhat muddy - I like the Bird Song, Cumberland and PITB from Set1 - set 2 lost a little this time around - teh Star isn't one of teh flowing melodious ones that I prefer - still its 73.

Notes: | Sick Bits MAtrix [2006-09-15] "In an interesting footnote to these shows, the official Grand Opening of this brand new venue on the Universal Studios backlot was the following weekend with a week-long series of Frank Sinatra shows but the Dead gave it a real shakedown acid test first." A review from the LLama: "The Playin is typically great for 1973, and the Dark Star>Eyes>Stella Blue combination puts this one over the top for me. Very unique jams. And BTW, the Wall of Sound seems to work pretty well tonight. Nice quality. An overlooked show that will knock you out!" - Dr. Flashback. Nice sound, no problem getting into the show, just not one of the best of 73, though it has the usual strong moments noted above by Dr. Flashback. |
