Notes: sbd [2006-04-20] The db.etree.org comments indicate that what is listed here as set 1 is the same as the previously circultaing 5/19/66 material, and that shnid=6516 is preferred. This shn set added the set 1 material to the prior shn set for 11/29/66 (shnid=4940) so this shn set is not needed if you have shnid=4940 and shnid=6516. As far as set 2 goes, this combined with the 12/1/66 materials is a great snapshot of the band at this time. The reviews in the TC are very well written, describing the Matrix and the role it played in the early SF scene. Listening to these early shows one looks for a glipmse of where the GD came from. What stands out is that there isn't something there that would point to where they would go in just a year. Pigpen's organ and vocals are high in the mix and Garcia is just starting to break out with his leads. Mostly covers too. The non-Pigpen tunes are very fast, the anti-thesis of what would become Garcia's and teh GD's fingerprint of slow tension and release style evolving jams. Garcia's vocals have a funny tremelo or vibratto which he would drop. Only the Pig tunes come across today as reasonably paced and perfromed. An early Pig rap is done here too. This is on the MHOL for 66. Sound is good considering the time.
