"Amandla Festival"

This was one of Bob's most unique shows because it was before the beginning of the Survival 1979 tour but it was after the recording of Survival. So this is really one of the first shows of the tour. Bob was asked to do this concert while in Jamaica recording the album Survival. Other artists present at the concert were comedian Dick Gregory who paid Bob respect by kissing his hands at the show. They made Bob perform during the afternoon because the promoters feared a powerful performance from Bob could spark a riot. He did give one of his most powerful performances with improvisation on many tracks from both Bob and the band. The most amazing part of this show is the encore in which Bob played 2 new songs at that time. During this long version of Zimbabwe and Wake Up & Live he gives one of his only speeches.

Notes: Bob Marley and The Wailers July 21, 1979 "AMANDLA: Festival of Unity. A benefit concert for relief and humanitarian aid to Southern Africa" Harvard Stadium Boston, Massachusetts, USA Improved DVD video - the previous soundbaord audio has been replaced here with a soundboard plus speed-matched audience matrix mix. Bass equalization was also done to better even out the mix. The video image was improved quite a bit overall by "repairing" lots of frames with video noise and places where there were gaps in the video/soundboard source (see below). 00:00:00 opening announcer 00:01:15 Dick Gregory talk 00:15:07 Dick Gregory introduces Bob Marley > Bob talk 00:16:12 Positive Vibration 00:21:32 Slave Driver 00:25:53 Them Belly Full 00:29:58 Running Away > 00:35:06 Crazy Baldhead 00:39:08 The Heathen 00:44:19 War > 00:50:11 No More Trouble 00:52:06 Lively Up Yourself 00:57:18 No Woman No Cry 01:04:14 Jammin' > 01:10:02 Get Up Stand Up > 01:14:51 Exodus (with Babatunde Olatunji) 01:23:30 encore break 01:26:39 Zimbabwe > 01:33:36 Wake Up & Live > 01:44:17 band intros by Junior Marvin 01:46:01 credits & announcer 01:46:23 end Bob Marley - lead vocals rhythm guitar (only up to the middle of Running Away) The Wailers: Carlton Barrett - drums Aston "Family Man" Barrett - bass Al Anderson - lead guitar Junior Marvin - secondary lead and rhythm guitar, supplemental stage announcements Tyrone Downie - keyboards Earl "Wya" Lindo - organ & clavinet Alvin "Seeco" Patterson - percussion The I Threes: Rita Marley - backing vocals Judy Mowatt - backing vocals Marcia Griffiths - backing vocals
