Notes: complete sbd via C Miller [2007-03-13]I like this Bertha and Peggy-O. And come to think of it Deal has a nice bounce o it - seems like Jerry is having a good night - enunciates his words to provide some extra embellishments to the tunes. Check out Keith's nice piano work on Deal as well. And they throw in an EOTW>China Doll combo at the penultimate slot in set 1 with the EOTW having a nice bouncey easy going gate with some pleasing improv and a Stronger Than Dirt jam. Very good set 1 for this time and tour. Maybe being the last tour date energized the band. Set 2 has an interesting segue from Phil&Ned into PITB which features a rare drum solo. Set 3 reverts to the boring delivery that characterizes much of the music played on this tour. Though the sound quality and mix are good, and Keith's work is exceptional overall its not enough to make this much more than a one listen show and then for selected highlights.

Notes: Grateful Dead September 21, 1974 (Best Guess) Palais Des Sports- Paris France TRT- 29 Minutes Master 1/2 EIAJ Video Reels- Transferred in 2006 on a EIAJ AV-8650 Deck to VHS- Converted from VHS to digital with VHS-DVD Recorder VIDEO- 720X480 Resolution MPEG-2 4:3 Ratio 29.97 FPS 4992 kbs AUDIO- AC3 2 Channel- 48Khz- 256kb Setlist- Big River- Complete China Doll-Complete Jam-- 2nd set?? Jimmy Row- Complete Big River- Complete - This appears to be the exact song and shots from the first Big River- NO idea why it is on twice! This footage came to me through a lot of reels that I bought from a guy about 3 years ago. It has taken me a while to get it converted. I had approached Grateful Dead Productions about trying to get it in future DVD, but that never materialized because they were in the process of closing things down. The footage is far better than the Fillmore footage in quality-- probably shot from a tripod in the balcony somewhere. This was not a very stable format, so the transfer was very problematic. It is VERY difficult to get a good transfer from these decks. They are very finicky and often times will not play footage from a different type of deck- ie- a Sony EIAJ machine can have difficulty with a reel that was recorded on Panasonic. Furthermore, not too many people are out there that do the transfer. The person who did this had done transfers for the Dead before on 1/2 inch as well as 2 inch video. He did as good a job as could be done with this footage. Im sure that somebody can synch this with the existing audio out there to provide a better experience. This reel was labeled as Reel 1-- It is my hope that there is a reel 2 out there which will somehow be discovered. Please chime in with your thoughts on this show-- I am by NO means an expert on GD, and am guessing from the setlist and the markings on the tape reel that this is the 9/21 show in Paris-- Any verification of this would be helpful- Clip from Jimmy Row is available at- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgwJJgF0BvY. Also-- if you enjoy this-- I ask that you make a donation to Guitars Not Guns-www.guitarsnotguns.org, a national charity that brings guitar lessons to disadvantaged children. This footage along with the other things I have unearthed was not cheap. If you love progressive metal in the Bay Area, come see my show www.bayarearockfest.com on May 4th and 5th.

Notes: Grateful Dead September 21, 1974 Palais Des Sports Paris, France Audience video from side of stage balcony - black and white NTSC DVD video from 1/2 inch open reel video master. The video is mostly dark and distant, but the audio is fairly decent audience SQ. The previous seed of this had the audio and video out of synch and Big River was included twice. For this seed the duplicated section has been removed and the audio is now in synch with the video. Accurate chapters and a selection menu have also been added. 00:00:00 - chapter 1 - China Doll 00:05:36 - chapter 2 - Seastones > Space 00:09:56 - chapter 3 - Playing In The Band [last minute only] 00:11:04 - chapter 4 - Row Jimmy 00:19:55 - chapter 5 - Big River 00:24:38 end Info from the previous torrent of this material: This footage came from a bunch of reels that were purchased together. The footage is not very decent black and white video shot from a tripod in the balcony facing the side of the stage. This was not a very stable format so the transfer was very problematic. It is VERY difficult to get a good transfer from these decks. They are very finicky and often times will not play footage from a different type of deck - for example a Sony EIAJ machine can have difficulty with a reel that was recorded on a Panasonic deck. Furthermore, not too many people are out there that do the transfer. The person who digitized this had done transfers for the Dead before on 1/2 inch as well as 2 inch video. He did as good a job as could be done with this footage. This reel was labeled as Reel 1 - It is my hope that there is a reel 2 out there which will somehow be discovered. ----------------------- Lineage: 1/2 inch Black and White open reel video > (unknown transfer specifics) > NTSC DVD posted on Dime > Cinematize2 (lossless elementary stream extraction) > DVD Studio Pro (re-synched audio with video, removed duplicated section, added accurate chapters and menu) > VIDEO_TS file set. Attributes as reported by MPEG Streamclip: Video: MPEG-2, 720 x 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps, 9.20 Mbps, upper field first. Audio: Dolby Digital AC3 2/0, 48 kHz, 256 kbps. The previous seeder had some doubt as to whether this was correctly dated, but it has been verified by matching the audio to the soundboard recording that exists from this show. I did not get very far in an attempt to combine soundboard audio with this footage due to numerous cuts in the Seastones > Space and the fact that some of that section is missing from the soundboard recording and with a vast difference in the sound quality of each source.
