Notes: | One of the most "unusual" Dead shows I have heard. These are audience tapes from multiple sources. 1st listen, I was put off on the quality, but oh does the music make up for that! These don't exist in the vault so this is the best you'll hear from this night. If you are adventuresome, and want to hear some unusual songs, Dark Star with lots of glockenspeil, a duck quack right at the most intense moment of Dark Star, and killer, I mean killer Dead, THIS IS FOR YOU! If you're a "pristine, Healy 32 channel soundboard mix" kind-of-a-person, you will find this appalling. Its one of my favorites. Thanks to Rick Lepley for this one. Acoustic set IKYR very slow, unusual rendition, FOTD incredible. And for unusual segues, how about these two: Mystery Train-> My Babe, New Orleans-> Searchin'. First Arund&Around, last Operator.

Notes: | Noah Weiner's upgrade to the PCRP seed. This is the preferred source as of [2006-02-22] Can't say it any more eloquently than Dr. Flashback "Reviewer: dr. flashback - - November 19, 2005 Subject: Top Ten!! Well steal my face and call me Bozo, this show just made an AUD tape lover outta me!! I had seen this show mentioned around for years on the boards, and of course it's high up on the Deadbase survey list for 1970 as well. But hey, who has time for AUD shows when there's so much SBD to grab?? (he said foolishly). After reading the reviews of this new remaster from the Port Chester folks, the old Dr. decided to take the plunge and DL this monster. So I load up Set One in my WAV player and click on FOTD. I was stunned! Speechless! The clarity of the vocals and acoustic guitars is amazing. I would have never believed an AUD from 1970 could sound this good. Okay, so maybe not quite up to the Holy Grail of 8/6/71, but close. REAL close. A big hats off and a pass of the pipe to the Port Chester group. But of course it helps to have a great source recording to start with - which this is. The acoustic set features some fairly rare items - a slower El Paso, a beautiful Rosalie, and an even rarer Operator. The FOTD and Uncle John are stellar, and the Ripple really sweet. Well that's about the whole set isn't it - hell they're ALL good here. The band is in a good mood and it comes through in the singing. Set Two finds them trying out some different material, since no doubt they played almost everything they knew the previous 4 nights here. Kind of a laid back set if you can dig it, with lots of Garcia doing bluesy jams in the middle section - which is mostly instrumental. The Morning Dew is a real standout though, very strong. And the rare Baby Blue make this a very enjoyable set overall. Okay, put on your space helmets Cadets, and get ready to obtain orbit, cause the last set is not of this world!! A great Truckin (still a new song here) kicks it off, and then a seamless segue into Dark Star. First, some nice spacy jamming with Jerry offering all 64 Crayola colors in an ever-changing sound collage that's on the mellow side. Then after the verse - look out!! They go immediately into a long Feedback-like weirdness section, led mostly by Mickey and Bill on percussion FX. At the beginning during the Gong jam, someone in the audience contributes some bird calls - which temporarily breaks the spell and Bobby jokingly admonishes the crowd to "be serious". Priceless!! Warning - this Dark Star is a bit harsh if you're not into electronic effects. Very similar to the Caution>Feedback jam of the 9/20/70 show. But I like it, call me a freak. You'll find it hard to believe this is the same band that played Little Susie an hour ago!! Finally Phil and Jerry enter the fray, and morph the jam into a fine early Main Ten (read Playin) jam. And the Dancin is just over the top, with Jerry delivering some scorching leads. The rest of the show is so hot it's beyond description. Suffice to say that Pigpen brings it all down to earth with one of the best Good Lovins of the year. Those lucky few who were at this show really got their money's worth, and probably their lives changed as well!! This one went right to the top and rang the bell for me. A Top Ten for sure, with the acoustic set, a fine shining example of what the Dead could do in 1970 when the force was with them. Suggestion - put this AUD show on a good stereo, tweak your EQ a little, esp. the bass. Turn out the lights - no ALL the lights. Turn on your surround sound and light up a bowl of Cheerios. I guarantee that by the 3rd or 4th song - you'll feel like you're IN the audience!! A great experience and a must have show for fans of this period. cheers, Dr. Flashback :-)"

[2007-09-05]Retained because it has different audience masters, but the Noah Weiner version of Ken Leigh's tape is the preferred source for this night IMO.
