Notes: (Jerry's 31st Birthday!) This SHN set is a compilation of previous SHNs seeded by Seth Kaplan and Noah Weiner. The bulk of the show is provided by a slightly degraded SBD (source 1). Dark Star through Morning Dew is from a crisp SBD remastered by David Gans (source 2). A very good mono audience recording (source 3) provides the following patches: --the first 5 tracks of disc 1 that are missing from the SBD --the first ~10 seconds of Stella Blue --the first ~5 seconds of Half Step --dropout @ 8:44 to 8:47 of GDTRFB --~30 seconds at the end of GDTRFB and very beginning of OMSN --the first few notes of GDTRFB are clipped (they are also clipped on the audience recording) --OMSN is rather degraded and may be from an alternate, higher generation SBD source --Sound Forge was used for minor pitch corrections and other minor edits Notes: 92478 - dc offset removed from all tracks - the left channel, in the aud source, has been boosted by 2.4 decibels - a substantial number of sub-second dropouts have been repaired and several clicks removed - the first few notes in d1t13 were missing and have been patched in from the aud, and the whole track pitch adjusted - a number of level adjustments have been made - the transitions between most tracks have been cleaned up - some noise reduction has been applied to sbd tracks, except for d2t03-d2t06

Notes: gdADT - upgrade to prior version using 2nd aud source except for the "Dark Star" portion. Very good sound for an aud tape of this era. The show has lots of treats - a well jammed version of Bird Song, "They Love Each Other" starts out with a China-Cat'ish sound. Can't leave out the audient yelling for "Spidergawd" before MAMU! The Star > Paso > Eyes >Dew is a home run. The Star is very quick, jazzy for the first part. The second part is atonal and light - not angst like which it can be at times. The Eyes is as good as the Star with lots of jazzy playing and segues into a fine Dew. I wish they had played like this at Watkins Glen.

Notes: upgrade to previous gdADT seed [2007-02-10]Recording by Jeffrey Siniawsky, Neil Merin, and Joel Smith from down front near the stage on Jerry's side; mic held high. This is a monoish recording that has minimal crowd but no spatial soundfield so to speak. This is a must hear 73 performance. Jerry's playing is especially animated and Dark Star Eyes are played with up tempo jazzy style which I enjoy.

Notes: cotsman patched sbd. most complete as of 10/02 [2007-03-18]Standard delivery set 1 with a nice Bird Song, but little cohesion as the songs alternate between slow and faster tunes. Set 2 continues more or less in this fashion until the improv section of Dark Star > El Paso > EOTW >Dew. Sound quality and mix are ok but more of a PA feed than your Betty Board mixed for your ears listening pleasure. Fortunately, the jam section is available in much better quality. My split ratings convey that the jam section is a must hear but the rest is optional. On my last hearing I noticed that Garcia was adding some subtle variety in his note selection on Half-step and Row Jimmy, almost like he was started to wake up and get prepared for the jam on the horizon. One last comment is that after listening to much of 73 the EOTW are delivered with this mechanical feel to it - even though it has a long improv section, it just seems to evolve with a predetermined goal - maybe its the Stronger Than Dirt jams that occur at the end.

[2012-04-01]Apparently there was some issues with the transfer and mastering of this recording so a better one is supposedly in the works

Notes: flac16; This is a remaster of shnid 12222 remastered by SIRMick June 2008 [2008-07-15]This is a favorite version of Dark Star, characteristic of the best of 73 - Sir Mick has done a nice job remastering, this is not one of the richest 73 sbd's out there. Still, this should be on your must hear once list.
