Comment
With John Cipollina on most of this, probably the reason the Dead always mixed him so low every time he played with them after this!

Notes: This is a very strange show - difficulties with the sound system might explain a lack of singing during the second set, though the jams are very inspired.

Notes: A friend shared the following info: This circulates with date June 19 1968 at the Carousel, but some good sleuthing by CM and others has it now at a much more reasonable date of Feb. 19 1969. An event called that Bill Graham called "The Celestial Synapse" and it was a private event. Here is some information of this very strange night at the Fillmore... From Mike Dolgushkin.. "The show that circulates as 6/19/68 is misdated. It's actually 2/19/69--the Celestial Synapse at the Fillmore West. I listened to it not long ago and thought "no way this is June of '68." It sounded real close in time to the Live Dead stuff, and you can hear TC poking out of the murk from time to time. Plus, it includes both Not Fade Away and The Main Ten, which started appearing on a more/less regular basis in April of '69.What clinched the date was reading the Rolling Stone review of the Celestial Synapse in the booklet that came with the Fillmore box set. It describes everybody in the Fillmore getting naked and crazy at about two in the morning, among them Don McCoy from Olompali, who took the stage and started rapping. Bill Graham had to keep the security people from pulling him off. Anyway, on this tape, after Lovelight, you hear a bunch of whooping and hollering, after which someone gets on stage and announces "Hi, my name's Don McCoy." Apparently the date that's written on the vault copy is hard to read; Dick originally thought it said 8/29/68. Another mystery solved. Tell your friends!" From unclemaude... "Last year I had a strange run of synchronicity involving this show. I went to see Richard Thompson at the Fillmore and the opening act was Eliza Gilkyson. She told a long story about the only other time she had been at the Fillmore. It was at a invitation only party for the most hip and spiritual people in the Bay Area and she described being totally ripped on acid like most of the other people there. Also spoke of naked people, chanting and claimed that Jerry Garcia had been on stage naked and introduced himself as Adam and Mt. Girl as Eve. I would later find out she had the part about Jerry wrong, it didn't sound like something he would do to me anyway but it was a funny story. Around the time of the RT show I also read someone's comment on the LAMA about what they thought were the Dead shows where they played radically different and strange music. 1968-06-19 was on the list and I downloaded and listened to it after eating some 'shrooms. Sure enough it is a strange show and as I lay there listening to the stage banter and crowd chanting I remembered Eliza's story. When it gets to the part where the person on stage speaking announces that he is Adam and this is Eve I knew for sure it was the show in her story. Didn't sound like Jerry claiming to be Adam but she was right on about the rest of her description. Then a week or so later I was looking through my bookcase and saw a book called Amazing Dope Tales by Stephen Gaskin. I thought it might be fun to reread as it had been twenty years since the last reading. Turns out there is a chapter in the book called The Synapse Dance that goes into much detail about the event. Thought it a weird coincidence that I kept running into references to this gig since hearing Eliza's story then the Fillmore Box set arrives and there in the booklet is the review of the Celestial Synapse..... that completed my psychic run in with this gig...... love it when stuff like this happens." From Eric C... (not exact wording, I don't have the email anymore) John Cipollina is on this! Listen to mid way thru the jam and you can hear his guitar come out of the murk for a few minutes. So there you have it, make sure to pass on the correct date. The setlist is still correct. I didn't change any names of the files to keep it pure as possible. As always, enjoy! amellowsoul
